So long as North Korea doesn't like the sanctions imposed it might have some chance of success. North Korea doesn't have oil, so they have no under the table bargain chips for countries like France and Russia. However, if North Korea decides to continue to build weapons even in the face of sanctions it will just be another useless resolution. This is because the UN has proved time and again that they are unwilling to enforce their mandates through military action. The one thing you can be absolutely sure of is that the people of North Korea will suffer even more harshly now and it is completely the fault of their own government.

Holly O: I am not going to flame you, but rather try to point a simple fact. You are correct that it is hypocritical just from the standpoint of having the weapons. However, there is a great difference between responsible nations possessing nukes and unstable dictators. In almost every country possessing nukes there are checks and balances on who, how, and when these weapons can be used. In the case of North Korea you have one man with his finger on the button. Most of the world finds this scenario unacceptable.

It's really kind of pointless. North Korea is really not a threat to anybody, except maybe South Korea, and possibly Japan. They haven't even figured out how to aim a missile with any degree of accuracy yet.

OK, flame me.

But I gotta say I don't understand how we developed the right to tell any other country what to do. We have nuclear weapons, we are now going to tell any other country they can't have them?

Is it bad news, yes. Do we have the right to dictate anything to any other sovereign state? No. This goes for the UN and the US. It can't be some of us can do whatever we want, and others can't.

They can't even take care of their own country, no wonder most people think the U.N. is a bunch of toothless idiots.

To me, the UN is useless. It is a paper lion.
