I've been present at death in a few cases (courtesy ambulence duty).

And, I've watched dozens of people die slowly from cancer (I was clergy).

People who are dying will teach you about life. Once you figure out that everyone is dying, and someday, so will you, then life makes a lot more sense. That is the blessing that they gave to me.

For some dark humor, see Shel Silverstien's poem, "Still Gonna Die" (below).

Is it? I wouldn't call it a blessing having been present when several people have died. Its sad and it makes you yourself feel vulnerable. The only blessing as far as I am concerned is that the person did not die alone.

Cos you know they're not suffering any more, & you were with them til the end - which makes you a true friend if you could be the only one bothered enough to be with them when they needed you.

Because you would be cradling them in the last moment of life and then they would enter into Gods arms for eternity.
