I guess it kind of depends on how the subject is represented. Freedom achieved through war and bloodshed can be represented with a passionate red. The physical freedom of a ruthless individual might be better represented with darker colors.

It depends on what type of freedom. If you want freedom that's been fought for, I'd go with red. A more peaceful freedom, white or maybe blue. I'd be careful about using white, though, because it's more commonly seen as a flag of surrender.

White or red will give the affect of real drama or evil lurking. Also smoke machines will do the same then white light in the smoke.
