If you are only eight hours from Gulfport, then I would suggest that you buy a cooler such as an Igloo as big as you need.
Buy the shrimp that you want and put a small layer of ice on the bottom, the shrimp and the balance of the ice to the top.
Do this, as you are ready to head home.
BTW, I was raised in and near Hurley, MS.
GO HORNETS!!!
Have a good trip to the bay!
I would also recommend buying some craw-dads along with the shrimp, MUCH better than shrimp...IMHO...
robert p, where do shrimp without heads grow?

Bring or buy an ice chest. buy a bag of ice. Put the shrimp into a plastic freezer bag, making sure there is no air in it, and place inbetween the ice, so its covered from top to bottom. You need the sealable bag so the shrimp doesnt get wet from the ice if it melts, stays dry until you get it home. If youre buying live shrimp, the same thing, but they'll be dead by the time you get home. Theyll still taste good, though.

Take a cooler and pack it down with ice and put the shrimp in the middle of it in a bag.
It should hold for the 8 hours home. I've done fish from Florida for 7 hours and it was fine.

Storing Shrimp
Fresh shrimp that has not been cooked is very perishable. Shrimp should be used within two days of purchase to ensure optimal taste.
Store fresh shrimp that will not be cooked immediately in the coolest area of the refrigerator, preferably on ice and covered with waxed paper. The waxed paper allows air to circulate around the shrimp.
Cooked shrimp that is stored in the refrigerator should be eaten within 2-3 days.
Frozen shrimp, if packaged tightly, will last up to six months in most household freezers.
Shrimp that has been frozen tends to lose texture.
Once defrosted, shrimp should be kept refrigerated and used within three days.
Once defrosted, do not refreeze shrimp
