They do a lot more than that. In the US they are called obstetrical, or Ob/Gyn, nurse.

FYI - for all the people who said midwife, in the US, a midwife is an entirely different profession, and is regulated state-by-state. Some states require a midwife to be a nurse, others do not. Many hospitals don't allow midwifes who are not nurses to be in attendence, as well.

It's called a labor and delivery, or maternity nurse. You become one by completely nursing school then you pick what you want to specialize in once you start working. Usually most new nurses gain a lot of experience by working medical-surgical first. Then when jobs open in the departments they want, they apply.

Mid-Wife.... mid wives help a woman through her whole pregancy, especially during the delivery, they are there as a coach, and there for the first 2-3 weeks AFTER the baby is born to help the new mother, with nursing, and getting rest. so that she can gear up to be a new mother.
