Actually it depends on the context in which the term is being used.
Technically speaking:
If its a recipe and it mentions vanilla check the quantity. Essence would be in drops or tsp or ml etc.
If it mentions "1 pod" etc then its the vanilla herb. you get them in fancy supermarkets. They come in the form of thin sticks.
Usually, if a recipe would mention "pod" then the method would be to boil in milk or steam in milk etc.

Generally speaking:
"vanilla" refers to icecream.

No Vanilla and Vanilla essence are not the same. Vanilla is a plant. (same the coco plant for chocolate). And the plant is used in different things to flavour, like ice cream, chocolate etc. the vanilla extract is the pulp extracted from vanilla beans.

Vanilla is a natural ingredient, which is popularly used to flavour ice-cream, but also a lot of other things. Vanilla comes from the seed-pod of a rare type of orchid, and can be bought in a number of different forms: vanilla pods (the most natural form), vanilla extract (a liquid extracted from infused vanilla pods and alcohol), vanilla essence (a bit weaker than vanilla extract, and can contain other ingredients) and vanilla flavouring (often artificial, synthesized flavouring, and doesn't legally need to contain any real vanilla.). I hope this answers your question.

I believe that they mean Vanilla Extract, or the Essence of Vanilla, the same thing. Not vanilla ice cream. You can find Vanilla Extract in the spice section of the grocery store where you would find salt and pepper, cinnamon, etc.

Vanilla isnt ice cream, vanilla is a plant. It can flavor ice cream, but it isnt ice cream. Now essence of vanilla is like vanilla extract. You pull the flavor out of the vanilla bean, in a liquid form.

Yes, vanilla is an extract from the vanilla bean. You can get real or artificial vanilla extract (artificial is a chemical composition).
If they meant ice cream in the recipe they would have stated vanilla ice cream.
