Cloth is made on a piece of machinery called a loom. The loom has a lot of threads that go lengthwise, and then there is a gadget called the shuttle that zooms back and forth from left to right. The shuttle puts in the cross thread. It has to go back and forth thousands of times to make a piece of cloth.... in the old days the shuttle was "thrown" from side to side, back and forth, back and fotth, but of course, now it is all automatic.

So, now anything that goes back and forth is a shuttle... so you can have an airplane or a bus that just goes back and forth between two places, so they call it the "shuttle."
