If u are looking for the literal meaning of sardar it is commander or the one who leads a group of warriors or a group people, but Sardar as an Indian (India) term its normally refers to the Sikh's of Punjab (a state of India) who always wears a turban and having long beards. I assume that you have been compelled to raise this question since you are active in riddles/jokes section and came across with lots of sardar jokes posted by Indian participants of this forum, I always wonder on the quantum of sardar jokes, it always describes a sardar a kinda fool or like blondes where as in fact they are not. During the invasion of foreign forces at India a group of people been prepared to fought against them and stop the atrocities carried by these foreign invadors. This group of peopel of warriors has to follow some strict rules or norms like the turban they are wearing, they have to carry a sword (now a days law do not permits) they are barred from using tobacco, etc there are infact 5 must be things they have to follow as a dressing code like. More details cab b given if u wish.

Sardar in hindi means a," tribal leader," the ji suffix is a mark of respect. and all sardars wore turbans.

People who follow the SIKH religion also started wearing turbans as a religious symbol, hence were called sardars.

They basically belong to the state called Punjab.

Collectively and individually they are an enterprising lot, and funloving people.

But as far as jokes are concerened, there are plenty sarrounding sardars. cause people believe that the heat caused in thier heads due to the constant wearing of turbans have reduced thier intellect.

They are the butt of indian jokes.
and they are a spirited people, who make light of this indignity and sometimes even join in.

Personally I respect thier enterprise. and productivity,
ask those who joke about the Sardars, if they have found one Sardar beggar on indian streets.

Well, we find beggars from every religion, caste, creed and language divide, none from the Sikh community,
Jokes aside, my deepest respects to them.
