Um, I'll bet your question that got yanked said something else, or I doubt they would have dropped it...
Anyway, there's somewhere between 12 and 20 million people in the United States that have no lawful right to be in our country. It doesn't really matter where they're from, but the vast majority's from one country: Mexico. Illegal immigration causes no end of problems, crime and poverty being 2 topics for starters, and then there's overcrowding, frictions with the legal US population,
and of course the topic of security. Human trafficking, drugs, gangs, ID theft, what's not to love? LOL
Anyway, MY stand on immigration is thus: What we've got now is broken, as a result we've got illegal immigration, which needs to be stopped cold, which is an enforcement issue, no jobs/no welfare=no illegal immigration, pretty straightforward, there.
We do need to improve the immigration system, too, to make sure that it's free of corruption, is effective, and serves the needs of the public without placing huge burdens on cities and state budgets etc. With a HUGE global population, there's going to have to be a rethink of the whole immigration business. This isn't 1900 anymore, when the US population was 80-90 million, and the Wide Open Spaces were still truly wide open, and the whole planet counted 1.5 billion total souls. This is 100 years later, after a century of off-the-charts growth, and 'sustainability' needs to be tabled...
The country's deeply in debt, which means that it'll be necessary to rein in spending to correct that. That means less handouts, which are part of 'the magnet'. Less handouts will also mean more people going out seeking employment at 'jobs americans won't do' or whatever, so bagging the whole welfare business will kill 2 birds with one rock.
Enforcement on employers will shut down the rest of the 'magnet', because if it becomes clear that you flat can't get a job in the United States unless you're in our country lawfully, that'll be the last we hear about 'undocumented workers' etc.
Other countries have businesses and industries, too. They can tend their own people, as can we. The future is now, the time for good, honest, clearheaded reforms is also 'now'. Live in the NOW...

Immigration laws were enacted in order to prevent some of the very things that are occuring today as a result of non-enforcement of those laws.
The original intent was/is the prevention of immigrants becoming a burden on the, government, services, and taxation of legal citizens. Therefore, in the past, immigrants had to have contacts in the US and/or enough finances to avoid being a burden. The laws also prevented those with diseases, as well as criminal backgrounds, from entering the country.
Over the past several years, the concern is multiplied by terrorists. The situation has evolved into nearly no controls whatsoever.
As a result, there are now unknown numbers of "criminals" in the US, illegally, aside from the numbers of immigrants who are unable to properly support themselves, and are a burden to taxpayers.
I've heard all the arguments that the "illegals" pay taxes with the future possibility of no benefits. I can tell you, as a witness to many incidents, most of this is BS. I've seen many "legal immigrants" hiring out as a sub-contractor, who in turn hire illegals for half or less than they would pay for legal employees.
The benefit to the legal sub-contractor is this. He/she pays the illegal employee in "cash". The sub does pay income tax on his/her full wages, but does not collect anything from the illegal. The savings to the sub, even though taxes are paid, is the difference in a tax rate of 15% +-, and a wage to the illegal, which is far below the prevalent wage.
Example: A sub pays an illegal $200 "cash" for a week's work. The prevalent wage may be $400.
The sub earns an adjusted wage of $1,000. Based on that assumption, the sub may pay taxes of $150-200.
If the sub had collected tax from the illegal, on $200, it may amount to $30-40.
The savings in tax, to the sub, with the reimbursement, would be $30-40, which is NOT the case.
So, the sub has paid an additional $30-40 tax from his own pocket, BUT, has saved $200 in wages by paying the illegal half the going wage. A net savings of $160-170.
This could be more.
I know of other ways that illegals have been exploited, to the benefit of employers.
None of this takes in to account, SSI that is not collected from the illegal, and the families of the illegals, born as citizens, become a burden to government services.
Neither does any of this take in to consideration that the labor costs, with illegals, are unfair competition to those who pay prevalent wages.
I know from where I speak.

WHAT IS DITTO'S MAJOR MALFUNCTION?!?!?! The question is about IMMIGRATION. It is NOT about illegal immigration specifically. The immigration issue is FAR bigger than whether someone is legal or illegal (as I will explain). These people here with OCD and ADD over illegal immigration are NOT addressing ANYTHING!!!! They don't even KNOW the issue!!!!
OK, here IS an answer to your question: The day people STOP wanting to come to the U.S. is the day the U.S. is in trouble. This does NOT mean we shouldn't distinguish legal from illegals. Further, immigration clearly - CLEARLY - has fueled this country and made it the powerhouse it is today.
Now, having said all that, I've actually become concerned recently with the sheer NUMBER of immigrants we have (regardless of where they are from). In my lifetime, we have hit 200 million people (in 1967), and tomorrow (Monday) we're expected to reach 300 million. I don't like that. I've travelled the country all my life, and I can tell you that the extra 100 million growth during my lifetime is noticeable. The problem is NOT taxes or benefits (our economy can manage this) - the problem is land use, environmental, resources... and the existence of a feeling of SPACE that I think is integral to the character of the United States. I worry about that.

i think immigration is just fine if they go about it properly. there are always two sides to the coin. on one hand you have illegals coming across the border taking many jobs that americans could use. however, most of the jobs they take are ones americans feel they are "above" and would not take them anyway. the government tries within limits to find more jobs for americans, yet it does nor prohibit things like outsourcing for large companies. there are many villages in india filled with americans only who have moved there to work instead of having their jobs outsourced. the gov't. needs to take a stand one way or the other, but stop riding the fence and flip-flopping back and forth.

America has immigration laws like any other country... currently there are large numbers of people interring our country illegally and scamming the system. Hopefully new laws will bring this problem under control and return security to our boarders.

The vast majority of illegal immigration people who come to this country are willing to work and desperate to make a better live for themselves and their children. But because they are here illegally, they are often taken advantage of. Their children see this and become angry and act out their anger which increases our crime rate and makes it less safe for all people in America. Also, illegal aliens cannot travel back to their homes and therefore, they are cut off from their families. A few aliens are terrorists and are here in America to hurt and destroy. I believe that the way to both help and protect is for United States and Mexico to work out a program where people from Mexico would be allowed into the States for a limited time to work, but must then go home for a limited time and then would be allowed back in for a limited time to work. For example, most of our fruit pickers come from Mexico. Allow a person in for say 6 months to pick fruit, then he must go home for 3 months, then back in for 6 months etc. That way, his family would not be broken up. He would not have to worry about traveling back and forth and there would be less chance of him being taken advantage of by some sleezeball.

Your answer by Ditto said it all and you don't need any other answers.
Immigration in the US is good and great IF those coming here are doing it LEGALLY and abide by all the laws.
As it is now happening, American citizens are being run over and into the ground with all the illegals usurping our way of life. They take, take, take while citizens are giving, giving, giving. I'm tired of it.'

Okie dokie. I'm an American and this is my point of view:
Anyone is welcome in America as long as they go through the proper channels, fill out the forms, get their visas and enter the country legally.
Anyone who bypasses the system steals opportunity from someone willing to enter the country legally.
Anyone who bypasses the system and enters the country illegally has broken the law. If they broke that law, what other laws will they break? I don't want law breakers in my country. I want honest people who follow the rules to be in my country.
