Especially a Labrador retriever. He is not sick but was left by the owner unattended that's why he lost a lot of weight.

You don't want to try to put weight on quickly - especially not a lab because so many of them become over-weight anyway. Just feed him a good quality dry dog food and let him gain back any needed weight slowly. He's much healthier underweight than over, so you don't need to worry. Has he been checked for worms? That could be part of the reason he's underweight.

Make sure he's wormed, just feed him the recommended daily amount of food,or slightly more, and the weight will come on gradually. Dry complete food is the cheapest, especially if you buy the big 15kg bags, but mixing it with canned meat is better. Butcher's tripe is a very good canned food. Exercise will help him build muscle too;the weight he puts on should not be all fat.
Well done for rescuing him and don't treat him like a human- treat him like the wonderful DOG he is!

This particular breed is prone to becoming very over-weight so you must get the weight back on gradually. If it is down to just pure neglect then just feed him once a day on a dry dog food, and put a little tinned food through it aswell. Dont feel you have to overfeed to make up for lost time it will do more harm than good

Did your vet say he needs to gain weight? If not, he is fine. Unless his ribs are seen through his skin he is not too thin. Feeling his bones through his skin means that he is at the right weight. He would not be eating a lot now because he is not exercising. Small dogs in particular need to keep their weight in check because being overweight is very hard on their organs and leg joints.

You should feed it a large can of canned dog food a day thats what worked for my dog...BUT WATCH IT! because labs get overweight very easily so be careful. Or you could just let it out the door for a second just to go to the bathroom instead of taking it on a walk, that also worked with my dog.

Make sure you take him for walks each and every day.Treat your dog like a human being.Dogs like attention and so go over the park and play ball with your dog might help.
Keep him on a good food diet.Make sure he gets the right foos supplements he needs every day.Put plenty of water down and just give as much love and affection your dog needs.

If he has been checked over and is not sick, nor have worms, a good quality dog kibble and lots of love and activity will soon have him shining. Cheap 'grocery' store dog food is not the best way to go. Compare ingredients!

I wouldn't OVER feed him, but just feed him regularlly once he has had his fill the first couple days. Also, Labs are very easily overwieght, more so than other dogs, so just feed him regular. I also wouldn't suggest depriving him of outside activity, jsut limit it. Dogs need to get out their energy somehow, whether it is chewing on your furniture or running outside.

You don't want to overfeed him and try to pack it on fast. It's not healthy for the dog. It all depends if this is a puppy, an adult, how much underweight, etc. What you do is going to vary on the answer to those.

Feed your dog a can of ensure each morning....the store brand equivalent will work just as well. I'm a dog lover too.
