I know of this product that a friend used for her son when he was biting his nails. Its called "No Bite" and its about $3-$4. You can find it in any drug store. It tastes terrible and goes on like a clear nail polish. The taste is so foul that it breaks the habit pretty easily. (Just smelling it closely made me sick)

Does he do it in front of people (like at school, etc...)... if so, I'm surprised peer pressure hasn't put a stop to it...
Are his teeth messed up requiring braces, etc??? If so just refuse to have the work done until he stops...maybe when he realizes chicks don't dig an over bite he'll quit...
Personally I'd give the kid a hard time about it, but I would worry too much about it, he's your child and you want the best for him, but it could be MUCH worse... shoot there are 11 year olds, having sex, shooting their classmates, shoplifting, etc... I think thumb sucking is wonderful compared to the alternatives.

If your child is sucking his thumb while inactive (watching T.V., etc.) then let him know that he cannot continue that particular activity while sucking his thumb. It could be that your child is bored and just needs something to do. Get his mind engaged in an activity and let him know that he can only suck his thumb while putting himself to sleep at night. ( Once he is asleep he will not suck his thumb.) Reward his changed behavior with an activity or item that he enjoys and praise him often. It won't happen overnight but being consistent is the key.

OK I went through this with my son. Put a little roll-on deodorant on his thumb. It wont hurt him in such a small quantity and it tastes SO bad I guarantee he won't repeat it in a hurry. My son sucked both thumbs and we discussed it when he started intermediate school - that he would be teased etc so he was a willing participant. We used all sorts of things supposed to work and he was happy with the taste of them all - right up to the deodorant. It cured him.

I know he will kill me for this, but when I first slept with my husband, I awoke to find him sucking his thumb. He was 25.
I could not believe that no one had tried to stop him. I sure did. I pulled it out of his mouth every time. He soon stopped.
His sister, who is now 40 still sucks her thumb when sleeping. I think it's disgusting.

When I was younger, I liked sucking my thumbs, my mom replaced it with food that I can suck on. I tried and I started sucking on that. Gradually, I got full, so I stopped, and when my mom told how my finger would turn if I sucked on it any longer, I totally stopped. I did still suck on the food suckers for awhile but finally I gradually stopped. It worked.. and for such a boy with a lot of ideas from you already.. you shouldn't bribe. Try what my mom did for me.. then if it doesn't work..but rubber on the outside of his thumb.. or something that won't hurt his finger. Because then he could just suck on that . without his finger being infected somehow.. Oh.. and tell him that if one day.. .he doesn't wash his hands and sucks his finger he will get infected. OR put WASABI on his finger and tell him to try it.. i know he won't like it.. it's very strong.. and it's something kids don't like all the time. tell him.. i'll put that taste on your finger if you don't stop.. it's dangerous to suck your finger so PLEASE stop!

Well i have no ideal on how you can stop him from sucking his thumb. I been doing it for 53 years and haven't stop either. This is one habit, he might have to grown out of it, I didn't. Well hope you some luck.

You can't get him to stop. He will stop when he is ready. I sucked my thumb until I was about 11 or 12 years old. One day I just got embarassed about it and just quit.

I have heard of some medicine kind of thing, very bitter and edible. You can coat his thumb with that to discourage sucking.
Thumb caps are available too.
