Jesus taught us that to be His followers we must be willing to carry our own crosses. The cross is a reminder of that. It is also a reminder of the great love that Jesus has for us that He was willing to die on the cross for us. The cross is not to be worshiped. Only God is worshiped. The cross is to remind us of what God has done for us.

Its not idolatry unless a person prays and worships it. There is nothing wrong with having things in our lives that show symbolism, but when those symbols over take our ability to worship God Himself and they become the things that are worshipped and prayed to then we commit idolatry.
I think a simple cross in and of itself is not sacreligious, but I also believe that a cross is a better symbol than one with Jesus crucified on it. The reason being is that Jesus dies on the cross for us yes, and that death means everything, but the sumbolism behind it doesn't stop there. He also rose from the dead showing us that death could be defeated. A cross w/o a depiction of His crucified body shows that. It shows the hope we have to look forward to through His sacrifice. Jesus is no longer on the cross so there is no reason to keep using a crucifixion to look for Him, does that make sense?

Jehovah witnesses and probably many others believe that it is idolatry or sacriligious. There are no crosses and no paintings of Jesus in the kingdom halls. It seems a little odd to those of us who are brought up in a more traditional church. I am not a jw myself, but I respect some of their beliefs. Actually, I see more crosses and religious symbols in places that are far from holy. I don't think anyone is going to hell for having a cross in their home or place of worship, as long as they don't worship the object itself. I also don't believe that God tortures people in hell for eternity, but that is another answer to another question.

Many churches still believe that we are not to make "gaven images of anything that is is Heaven above or on earth below." These idols mostly came out of Catholicism into the Christian church after the reformation but the practice is certainly not taught in the Bible. Interestingly early Christians were called "athiests" because they did not have any visible gods at all.

It's the old, "Do as I say, not as I do."
Actaully, there is power in symbols. That's why we shouldn't
take these things lightly.
The problem is people turn these things into fetishes. And
this can allow negative energies to enter them. That's why
God told the Hebrews not to keep things when they
conquered idolatrous cities.
The problem with fetishes is. What will a person do if they
get in spiritual trouble, and they don't have thier fetish with them?
FALL OUT?
All you have to do is draw a symbol in the air with your finger, and it will create a real seal of protection in spirit.
