You can't. It's impossible! Nearest you can come is choking someone out, but I wouldn't recommend you try it without proper training.

A good square punch, knee, elbows, or kick that land when the person isn't expecting it will most likely knock them out cold. It will do very small amount of damage but this isn't avoidable.

Let me tell you what we were taught in psychology class about getting knocked out. The reason person got knock out is so their mind close down so the body can focus on recover faster and better. So basically it's a type of trauma to the brain. Look at it this way, if person get knock out because of sheer trauma to brain then how can you expect someone getting knocked out without sheer trauma to brain? That's like as ask how you can bake a bread without any source of heat.

any time someone is knocked out, there is going to be some form of damage, often it's not permanent; but there can be permanent effects.

ever hear of the term "punch drunk" that's one type of the effects that can come from being knocked out from a punch, strike or choke, because it's a cumulative effect that happens over time.

because it's the body's reaction in repairing itself from the damage, just as you get sick and need rest, the body uses the time when you are unconscious to repair the damage done to it even the brain, but there will always be some type of damage caused from it.

but permanent effects will not always happen right away, it's usually a cumulative effect.

Every time someone is knocked out there is permanent damage done. It is just matter of the intensity and the frequency of the after effects. Often the person doesn't notice the effects but they certainly exist, keep getting knocked out and sooner or later it will be noticeable ( This also goes for non- bludgeoning knock outs like choke out and nerve strikes.)
To believe anything else is fooling yourself.

This is a good but very complicated question. There are ways to cause loss of consciousness without permanent damage, but they are far to complicated to describe here. It is part of pressure point fighting or Dim Mak. No reputable instructor teaches this unless we knows & trusts the student. If your instructor doesn't teach this, either he/she isn't knowledgible in this area or doesn't think you are ready for this level of training.
