They only preach it -- they don't practice it.

Wrong. Islam does not say that one should hit back on recieving a hit from others. Neither does it say that you offer the other cheek to get hit again. Islam says dont hit back but try to convince him and make him aware that what he did was wrong and he does not benefit in any way by his hitting act. Islam says to the followers that you try to change the other person by the influence of your behaviour. They will look at it and appreciate and them follow you

If you think trying to hurt someone gives you peace then nothing anyone says will change your mind. I see it differently.
For many years I saw the need to get even. It left me frustrated and angry because I could never get enough of it.
Now I try to forgive those who treat me unfairly and get on with my life as quickly as possible.
Once I put it out of my mind and move on I have the peace I have been seeking.
This way works for me, your way was a continual disaster.
Love and blessings Don

Well, I am a Reagan era Republican so I support Peace through Strength.
In you scenario I would keep myself fit enough for people to think twice before hitting me because I would obviously win a physical altercation. If then they are still foolish enough to hit me I would use my superior strength to subdue them with out striking them so they can see the error of their ways. If they relent their aggressive behavior I would release them and forgive them. If they refuse to give up then I would continually apply greater pressure until they have no choice.

Christians are taught that if they are hit - in all meanings of the word - they should turn the other cheek. They may still see this as an ideal, but find it impossible to follow this part of Jesus' teaching when they are beset by people who threaten them.

if u dont retaliate against a hostile person, their hostility will increase. so its better to be peaceful urself, but defend urself wen attacked
the Quran says:
"Fight in the way of God those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for God loveth not the transgressors" (2:190)
"And fight them on until there is no more Tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in God; but if they cease, Let there be no hostility except to those who practise oppression." (2:193)
"If then any one transgresses the prohibition against you, Transgress ye likewise against him. But fear God, and know that God is with those who restrain themselves." (2:194)

Okay, so he hits you, you hit him, he hits you again, you pull a knife, he pulls a gun. You stab, he fires. Bam! you're both dead. What did you accomplish?
Guess your right! Peace! The Rest in Peace kind of peace. Well done.
