Should every U.S. citizen between ages 18-21, be required to serve atleast 2 yrs Military service, of their choice, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, (perhaps even Border Patrol although that's not military)? Wartime, Peacetime, it doesn't matter when.

I believe all males should. You want the comfort of the security of this country then help keep it secure. I spent a good part of my life in the Marine Corps and I can't stand these pukes that don't appreciate what they have!!!!

Not as long as we have the nuts in power that think our young men and women are expendable for the economic gain of our multinational corporations. Many nations require compulsory service, but they don't jump into other countries and generally mind their own business. Some nations have a civil corps in addition to the miliary options, so that young people can provide some community service.
If anything, a civilian corps would be beneficial to our nation, but also to help our young people grow up and be exposed to real life a couple of years.
I'd certainly class border patrol as a military action, many nations have their military maintain their borders although we don't since most of our military is scattered around the world instead of serving us here at home.

protection stress service isn't required interior u.s.. The military are all voluntary. I went in because i did not elect to bypass to varsity as we talk after extreme college, and that i had to hitch the military when you consider that i develop into 5. i'm satisfied I did! those were the ultimate years of my existence and that i lived in Europe for many my time. I stated issues no one else who has no longer been there stated, and made acquaintances with Germans and socialized and discovered plenty. Then I went to varsity. there is not any longer some thing on the books at present interior u.s. about making protection stress service necessary. you've a foul instructor who's feeding you garbage.

If you are between 18-21 you should be in College. By 21 the education should be done. Since Bush just drafted 35,000 what is your point. The Guard is also the same as the Draft, since they no longer serve one weekend a month State side.
This is just more of the same from the Republicans in Congress. In a Democracy majority rule is present. Majority rule did not decide to draft 35,000 or turn the National Guard into a draft.

I am not sure that military service is the answer, but some sort of civilian service would be a good idea (such as working with the elderly, serving with an ambulance corps, something like that).

This does not contradict democracy, as one responder noted. Democracies can impose requirements on the citizens.

NO WAY. I would leave the country in a heartbeat if I was going to be forced to serve in the military. I have never fired a gun, and the thought of killing anyone or being around death makes me sick to my stomach. The volunteer military has worked well, and it better serves the people who join (since the government must give incentive to join instead of just forcing people to join).

Then this would not be a democracy.

They do this in some countries, Israel is one of them off the top of my head.

so my answer would have to be no. Too many people are just not cut out for the job.

No
Because i'd rather be protected by a military that wants the job..not one that is forced to do the job.
Should everyone be a fireman....policeman?
where would it end?
