There are many references in the Qu'ran to the killing of other people in the name of Allah. Like the Bible, which also has murder in it, I believe there is a context. Can anyone tell me in what contect they believe these versus in the Qu'ran refer?
I don't want to jump to conclusions, and am hoping to clearly understand the context of the Qu'ran.
Many thanks for sincere answers.

Many thoughtful answers. Thank you.
Follow up question: Are the Jewish and Christian churches considered oppressors? Do they stand in the way of the teachings of Islam?
I ask because there is a verse in the Qu'ran which describe followers of Moses, Abraham and Jesus as brothers to Islam, but current events seem to suggest otherwise. Again, I simply seek understanding.
Thanks in advance.

Well Demoiselle, I think you said a mouthful. :).
Much like leaders in the Middle East do what they can to prohibit the Bahai's from being heard. BTW, in case anyone is wondering, I am not currently of any religion. Instead, I seek the truth about all. I believe that any religion that is based on the truth of the one true Great Spirit, is peaceful in nature. What we, and our religious leaders do with religion, seems to have become another story. My mind is open to all religions, but I will make up my own mind on the interpretations and modern day actions of them.
Again, thanks all.

The teachings of the Holy Quran are fairly clear concerning war. War is permissible in self-defense, so that good people may resist oppression. Allowing oppression to fill the earth is not "peaceful," but a cause for further oppression. The following two verses may be helpful for you to consider.
Holy Quran, 22:39: Permission (to fight) is given to those upon whom war is made because they are oppressed, and most surely Allah is well able to assist them (1).
Holy Quran, 60:8: Allah does not forbid you respecting those who have not made war against you on account of (your) religion, and have not driven you forth from your homes, that you show them kindness and deal with them justly; surely Allah loves the doers of justice (2).
In the first verse, we see that permission is given to engage in warfare to those who are attacked and oppressed by the enemy. The early Muslims were tortured, killed, and exiled from their homes by the pagan Arabs (the Muslims were persecuted so badly that they were forced to leave Makkah)--this is the context for which you are looking.
In the second verse, it is clear that there is no call for war against peaceful people; in fact, Muslims are to be kind to those who do not oppress them.
Remember that the principle of justice is preeminent in Islam. Warfare is for the purpose of resisting oppression, not for the purpose of aggression: "...if they desist, then there should be no hostility except against the oppressors" (3).
The social policy of Islam is to enjoin what is good, forbid what is evil, and establish justice on earth.

Dear Gonzo
thanks for you sincere Q and though I'm not a scholar but i hope my answer will be useful for you...
Spreading Islam is a divine message and a duty on all the Muslims.it's not to control the world of course but rather to spread peace, love and morals of Muslims all over the world.
When you try to spread a new religion or a new idea whatsoever was the idea you're trying to deliver to others you will probably face a lot of problems with rulers of some towns or countries who Don't want you to deliver your message to the people because they are worried about their positions and they don't want to lose their control over the residents of their area.
If their refusal hinders you, then you will need to use force with them for the sake of the people who have the right to know about you message and to decide freely what to choose.
in this case only you will need to fight otherwise you don't have the right to hurt anyone except to protect yourself and people...
this is ISLAM
I hope this will help

I'm a Moslem from Iran.God has ordered Moslems to talk with infidels peacefully and convince them to convert to Islam (the most complete religion).it does'nt order for murder or something.no Moslem has the right to kill any one even atheists.it's a murder because as long as one lives he must have the chance to be guided and no one has the right to rub him from this inalienable right..but God has ordered his prophet to fight those who try to stop Islam from spreading so that more people could convert to this great religion and live a peaceful life.of curse not always only when they attack Moslem countries as my other friends mentioned at wars.and Jihad means to defend your country when someone attacks it.it does'nt mean to attack someone in their homeland but to defend yourself in your own homeland just like Palestinians.I admire you for seeking the truth.Thanks.
No christians and Jews are both respecful for us.please don't believe in lies that you hear on TV,newspapers,anti-Islamic websites or people.those who have been fooled by their unfair media tend to close their eyes towards the truth and to believe in media's lies.they all think we are their enemy while we're not.it's just the way they tend to think of us.again I appreciate you for your wisdom.for getting to know the truth yourself instead of believing in lies that have absulutely no source but political issues.thank you.by the way I think you're much more better than all fooled Christians cos you think instead of having wrong beliefs.

The answer is too long for this venue. There are contexts that have to do with each verst that have been explained in Tafsir over and over throughout the 1400 years. If you want more info you can contact me through my profile.
Peace and Blessings,

I am not a scholunderstand but I understand that Quran mentioned killing non-Muslims in war (the wars in the name of religion, that there are none at the moment). Besides there are numerous other places in Quran and Hadith that mention not harming the unarmed, elderly, women and children. peace

Islam allows Muslims to go to war when infidels are fighting against the spread of Religion and since the message has to get through, Muslims can fight.I quote from the Kor'an, "But if the enemy incline towards peace, do thou (also) incline towards peace, and trust in God: for He is the One that Heareth and knoweth (all things)."
Islam calls upon us to " Invite (all) to the way of the Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching: and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious: for the Lord knoweth best who have strayed from his path, and who receive guidance."
morever, in Islam killing an innocent soul is like killing the whole of mankind.
"Human" soul in Islam is very precious.
Just an ordinary Muslim. Peace be upon you.

Yes there are referrences to 'killing' in the Quraan and if quoted out of context Islam can be made out to look like a violent religion I will give you some examples :
For instance The Verse of the sword from Surah Al Taubah (9:5) is frequently quoted by those seeking to discredit Islam.
The verse says :(9:5)
'Then when the months of shelter are passed away, slay the Polytheists (referring to those who broke the pacts) wherever you find them and seize them and beseige them and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush and if they repent and do perform Salaat and do give Zakaat, so leave them their way. No doubt God is All-Forgiving,All Kind.
But ... most people omit the preceeding and following verses.
Surah Taubah (9:3)
'And a proclamation from God and His Messenger unto Mankind on the day of the Greater Pilgrimage. God is quit of the Polytheists, and His Messenger (too). So if you turn to God it is better for you and if you turn away then know that you can never tire God. And give thou good tidings to the unbeleivers of a painful chastisement.'
(9:4) goes on to say ' But those Polytheists with whom you have made a compact (covenant or pact), then they failed you not a little and helped not against you anyone, you fulfil with them their covenant till their term. No doubt God is pleased with the precautious ones.
(9:5) 'Then when the months of shelter are passed away, slay the Polytheists (referring to those who broke the pacts) wherever you find them and seize them and beseige them and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush and if they repent and do perform Salaat and do give Zakaat, so leave them their way. No doubt God is All-Forgiving,All Kind.
(9:6) ' And if any of the Polytheists seek protection from thee, grant him protection till he hears the Word of God, then do thou convey him to his place of security - that because they are a people who do not possess knowledge'
The above verses are just the verses around (9:5) and were revealed at a time when the muslims had signed pacts with neighbouring tribes. Some tribes broke the agreements that were signed. Therefore the verses above came into effect, muslims could take action against those tribes who broke the pacts but only once the Holy months had passed. The last verse shows that even if any of those who broke the agreements asked for protection they were to be protected and exposed to Islam (Word of God) and then released to where they would be secure due to the fact they could have been ignorant of Islam and what Islam was.
That was but one example if anyone ever quotes a verse to you read on a bit and check the commentary as well because the Quraan was revealed at points in time. Whenever events were happening around the Prophet SAW verses used to be revealed which assisted him and the muslim the situation they found themselves to be in.

I am just a muslim who reads the Quran, I am no scholar. Out of my reading and my knowledge, Jihad (fighting in the name of Allah) is allowed to defend and protect the muslim nation when under threat or when attacked. Peace is always the better option but it does not always work.
Thanks.
