Oooh....a very subjective question.
My favorite wine depends on mood and food! I have picked wines from the description, and even (laughing) the label.
In college, we had Boone's Farm Strawberry wine parties...because we liked light and fruity. At a restaurant, I picked a bottle purely because it had a gorgeous picture of a Duck on it...because my then-boyfriend, now husband, loved ducks (mallards, in particular). Turned out, I was drinking a Duckhorn Merlot.... to this day, one of my most favorite wines. (Warning, not cheap -- but anything out of the Duckhorn vineyard is really good!)
If you're looking to experiment, take a look at the wine/food pairing list on the Food Network's site.... great suggestions.
Wine snobs are nothing more than people who have a more than normal interest in wine and dedicate time to learning the nuances of the grapes, the growing conditions, the vineyards.
Remember one rule: if you like it, it's good. It's that simple.

I love the American Zinfandel grape, makes a wonderful big red wine that has a wide range of flavors for me. Don't buy the $50.00 bottles but would always recommend Clo Du Bois, 2001or 2002, Zinfandel, aged in oak. Nice wine for under $20.00 per bottle.

Barbera D'Asti - a beautiful ruby red wine with a great and soft after taste. It is from Piemonte, Italy. The grape is the Barbera and Asti is the region. You should try it. It is a little expensive, about 15 euro a bottle but it is like fluid heaven on the tongue.

Personally I prefer a well made Mead (honey wine) but I also enjoy a good Merlot or a nice blush

Evenings or winter, a good peppery Cab or Merlot. A nice cold & buttery Chardonney on a warm day...

Brown Brothers Dolcetto & Syrhia!!
I can drink a bottle of the stuuf without realising I've topped up my glass!
It's a Great summer drink as it's a sparkling red that you drink chilled.
