Acting or thinking ethically has nothing to do with culture or religion. One can always act ethically regardless of the cultural or religious climate. Just relying on one's own inner sense of what is ethical (and I think the average person knows when he or she is acting ethically, and when he or she is just using his or her religious beliefs as a crutch or excuse to behave badly) is enough.

Religion is ehtics. It is NOT being religious that is a threat. By that, I do not mean being a non-believer. I mean those who claim to believe in any religion and show no morals, manners or ethics in behaviour.
Tolerance also is a very important issue which takes us back to religion and ethics.
My religion, Islam, teaches me to respect people and not be biased. This can sound weird because you see so many things falsely happening in the name of Islam, but it is because of not being good practicioners of the religion.

Why do you think it was so much easier any other time?
There were always distractions and temptations, so you can't blame living in 2006 for anyone's shortcomings.
We have the same responsibility to act ethically as someone did in 1723.

Of course there is-be aware that every action has a consequence and try not to act in a way that hurts others. It isn't too difficult and doesn't require and God or theology.

one needs to abide by the laws rules and mores of the society in which one lives as well as the constitution and by - laws of the religious belief system in which one participates. if one does not then one is considered deviant and subject to the penalties agreed upon by those who made these rules for behavior.
