Although most people, I see, are suggesting ear plugs, I remember a time when I, too, wanted ear plugs for swimming.
If you dive deep enough, earplugs can even cause pain. If diving deep, or, especially if SCUBA diving, you should not wear ear plugs.
If you have an infection or other condition that causes pain when water gets in your ear, you should see a doctor and stop swimming until the infection clears up.
However, I recommend that you simply go on swimming without ear plugs, and allow water to enter your ear.
You should not be concerned about water entering. There is nowhere for the water to go except your outer ear tube (external auditory canal), which ends at the eardrum (tympanic membrane), about an inch or less from the projecting part of the ear (pinna).
Water in the outer ear will drain naturally a few minutes after exiting the water. If this does not happen, you can tilt your head to the side, facing the ear to the floor, and pull on the bottom of your earlobe gently. I find this usually clears the water quickly.
However, if you find the water does not easily come out, you may wish to use some over-the-counter drops os Swimmer's Ear solution, available at most drug stores. If the pain or problem persists, please see a doctor.

Earplugs; you can find them at the local store shop or Wal Mart. And if you feel ANY water in your ear then just go ahead and stop diving. Buy some swimmers ear thing and hopefully that will take away all of the water left in your ear. If not then go to the doctor.

Me? I stick my ears straight up out of the water. Might not work for you though.

wearing a bubble helmet is out of the question, so that just leaves you with wearing ear plugs.
