My cat always seem to know when I am sick. He sits or lays down next to me, butts me with his head - wanting me to pet him. When I do, after a while a will be feeling a lot better. Magic, no?

Yes, they do seem to be naturally inclined to sense when a human they love is not feeling well. They also seem to have the ability to make us feel better. I had severe abdominal pains one day that completely floored me (literally) and my siamese kitty came up to me, lay on my tummy and just purred. A few minutes later, I was able to stand up and found the pain was completely gone. She healed me. She was like a furry heating pad with a vibrating function:)

I don't know why they have this affect. I think it may be related to the purr. There's something about it that is calming and will resonate through the whole body.

Cats, dogs, birds, all sorts of pet animals behave differently when the owner is sick. When you have been looking after them and seeing them every day, they start sensing the way you are feeling. I was sad about something and crying once and my cat came right up to my face and headbutted me with a very concerned look.

No magic, you're his Mom, it is a protective, intuative mode that cats can get into. My Alpha male Tank does that to me, the female Silkie could care less, she just wants her pats! He just knows when I'm upset or out of sorts - it is then that he snuggles up to me even more!

I recently had a feverish cold, and for the two days when I did feel quite ill, my cat slept on my bed at night, which he hasn't done before or since.

Yeah my cats know when something's up & come sit with me. One of my more aloof cats who never sits with me came up & got on my chest like a little kitten when my Nan died & sat there with me all day as I sobbed.
