Yes, Nichiren Shoshu is a cult, and it has a political agenda, even though it claims to no longer have ties with the Soka Gakai. If you are practicing it, there is no harm in that. The harm would be in attending mass rallies and getting caught up in the social and political aspects.

A cult is a SECRET group. One we don't find out about until
something crazy happens within it.
There can be cults based on any belief. Like the blood cult
of Kali the Destroyer. Who really represented the recycling
aspect of Creation.
But that doen't mean a whole belief system is a cult.
