The same reasons that a large percentage of people go to sleep better when a fan is on. The 2 Most important similarity's are
1.It helps your body cool creating a more comfortable state. (Oceans, like fans, always have breezes)
2.Constant sound. (Like a fan, the ocean provides a imperceptible sounds that allow the mind to trigger a more relaxed state or unconsciousness)

Yes, after doing some research I have concluded that without a doubt there are some hypnotic elements to the calming effect of the ocean.

To answer the question about romantic feelings.
It has been shown in scientific studies that the calmer you are the more likely you are to trigger chemicals in your body like the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine. These induce a mental state of euphoria that varies by person.

We spend almost every hour of our day in man-made buildings, or on man-made streets in man-made cars, but I have reason to believe that walking on the beach allows us to realize the absolute and undeniable power and beauty of a universal higher power I like to call God.

I mean come on. I can sit here and talk about the scientific answer to your question. But romance and LOVE is on my list of GOD-Made.

It's calming because of the landscape, the sound of the sea,...
Hahaha! It's calming because you've never worked in a Restaurant near the beach. For the majority of the people beach=holidays, and holidays are meant to be calm (wait a minute! I'm thinking about Christmas and I'm not too sure now...)
