I am looking to get a tattoo done while I am over there next week, hopefully a little bigger than the fingernail-sized one I have now, probably about 5cm x 5cm.

I was wondering if anyone had any experiance of the tattooist over there, whether it tends to be cheaper or more expensive than England, whether they conform to the expected hygiene standards etc.

I would obviously rather pay slightly more for a reputable one.

I'm not interested in warnings, I just want to know whether the actual cost of tattoos is similar to the UK or cheaper.

I believe most of western European cities are very good for tatoos.
In Amsterdam you will be able to get a cheaper tatoo but the best quality tatooists usually charge more so you will end up paying the same for a well done job as it you got it done over here.
My friend had a piercing done in Amsterdam and he has had not problems with it.
I would seriously reccomend going somewhere fancy looking and expensive and with lots of awards and paying a bit more than going in a cheap back street place to save a few quid (or indeed Euros).

Here are a few places I fould on google for you:

http://www.houseoftattoos.nl/intro.html
http://www.sakuratattoo.com/
http://www.tattoopalace.com/

And probably you should ask here first of all:

Have fun in Amsterdam and be safe!

No, it's not any cheaper. We spent around 8 euros for a gram, which is about $12 USD. There are 28 grams in an ounce. So what you would pay $100 here for the good stuff, would cost you around $168 over there. We tried 4 different kinds and none were any better than the stuff we can get here. I heard that the stuff over there was better, but it wasn't to us. But being able to walk in to a coffeeshop and purchase it was priceless. We found some smoker friendly bars where we could drink beer and smoke, too, so that was really great.

I'd buy my own needles in advance and take them with you.
Don't trust anyones autoclave. It's not worth the 20 bucks you'll spend on your own needles. Get 3. A single, 3 round and a 5 round should be all you need. I always use my own and have 7 tattoo's from the linky below.
Don't forget the Tattoo goo, much better than A&D oitment for aftercare.

Tattoos would be cheaper in Amsterdam because of the pound/Euro exchange. You do not need to worry, top class Tattoist, go to the red light area, it,s safe good fun area. No problems, i live here so know a bit about Amsterdam. Have a nice trip.

don't get a tattoo over there. if you want a tattoo go to a good tattooist near you because that's the only good thing about health and safety laws in England.
