See a doctor for a prescription cream like 'Daktarin'

A prescription cream will be more effective then an over the counter product from a Chemist.

From a pharmacy site:
"Daktarin tincture is a broad spectrum antifungal product. It has been designed for the treatment of fungal nail infections. Daktarin tincture penetrates the nail and dries leaving a protective coating.

Daktarin tincture provides effective treatment for fungal infections in the fingernails and toenails."

The treatment is very simple too:
"Clean and dry the nail to be treated. Apply a thin layer of Daktarin tincture to the nail twice daily. After the infected nail has come off, continue treatment without interruption until a new nail has grown and the lesions are completely cured (usually for at least 2 months). Do not apply to open wounds."

You should refer to a treatment that uses proven antifungal ingredients (you can do so by checking with the FDA).

These active ingredients in the treatments are what you are really buying into and makes the most substantial difference in treatment. you should never use another medication for its off label use, you run the risk of worsening your nail fungus and causing irritation.

Nail fungus treatments containing Tolnaftate or silver can be especially effective so remember to buy into the ingredients, never the marketing.

I had this problem on a toenail. I went to a foot dr. The Dr. ended up removing the nail, and giving me an antibiotic cream....There is a prescription that they could of given me instead of removing, but he said it was not guaranteed to work, was severely expensive (my prescription plan would not cover it), and it had to many lousy side effects. The nail has grown back fine...no problems!
Best of luck, I really don't think it is as doom and gloom as the first couple answers!

Oh, boy, this can become a very dangerous infection. I had that one time and got Cellulitis, and had to get on a strong antibiotic, which was through an IV. It was vancomycin, which had to go through a pic line, which was a rubber tubing going through my vein. Don't mess around, and go immediately to the doctor. He will probably put you on an antibiotic. Most nail infections is due to getting false fingernails and the girl who puts them on does not disinfect her instruments she uses, so hurry and get to the doctor. That is what happened to me, and I had a fever of 103, and the infection almost got into my blood steam, in fact I think it did. Don't go over the counter, unless you know for sure what you have is not that serious.
