I have downloaded a film which is approx 800 mb. I want to burn it on a CD, but a CD is only 700 mb. I use Nero for Burning though I also have Real, Window Media, and Winamp and I tunes also. Please suggest a software to split the avi file into two smaller files.

Dont use movie maker. It will force you to transcode.
You will want to get 'VirtualDub"

Open the movie in virtual dub, and under the audio drop down menu, select, "Direct Stream",
and select the same under the Video menu.

Then in the timeline on the bottom, cut the movie off at about half, or at a slow scene or cut scene on the movie. Delete the second half, and save the first half.

Then do the same, but wit hwthe second half.

Doing this will output the movie at 500 fps instead of the 15fps you will get with reencoding to what is most likely a incompatable format.

There are also a few commercial AVI SPLITTERS (which are easier)with serial numbers freely available using a search engine.

I recomend VirtualDub because it is a tool people into video format on pc NEED to learn to use.

actuallt when you decide to burn it the software would automatically detect when you need to put another cd in order to complete the burnign process. You dont have to & you cant for that matter devide the file your wanting to burn into 2.

Hjsplit could be used to splite video clips even with the undeniable fact that i'm uncertain no rely if it rather works on dvd gamers you are able to desire to apply autogk to encode the image to a smaller format or purchase a double layered disc :)
