It's due to the activation of something called the "Migrating Myoelectric Complexes" which cause the muscles in your gut to contract. The noise is due to air moving due to the contractions.

To make it scientific, this is why your stomach grumbles if you are hungry.
1) Lack of food being digested therefore
2) Stomach keeps grinding itself and then
3) The mucus in your stomach gets destroyed(the mucus protects your stomach from the hydrochloric acids)
4) You hear grumbling sounds and a bit of pain

There are 25 wee guys with shovels in your stomach. When you eat, they shovel the food into your intestine so that it can make it's way out! When your stomach is empty they have nothing to do, so they go to sleep. The noise you hear is the 25 wee guys snoring in unison.

It's caused by the build up of digestive gasses. the stomach says a lot about our well being, this is why we have butterflies etc. wen feelin nervous or the s****s when scared. Hope this helps.

actually your stomach makes noises all the time, its just that when you are hungry there is nothing (food) in your stomach to soundproof it!!!
