I think everyone sees something different. I can give you a story not about me, about my grandmother.
My grandmother before she passed was in a nursing home for about 2 months. She had lung cancer, lost a lot of weight so she was perhaps about 85 lbs and all curled up in the fetal position and wouldn't come out for about the last week. When we were told it was getting close to her time my mother, uncle, aunt and myself went there.
We were all in the room waiting for the end, when all of a sudden my grandmother sat up and pointed to the end of the bed near my aunt. She kept insisting she saw 'Robert' and kept asking if we did. Now, we never saw anyone and not even a nurse had come into the room but my grandmother insisted Robert was here with us and she kept trying to reach out to him. After expending her energy, which she had little of, she laid back down and passed away shortly afterwords.
The 'Robert' she was talking about was my grandfather who had passed away 15 years before she did.
I'm an agnostic, I don't think there is empirical evidence either way for or against deities but I remain a skeptic on whether there is a god or not. However, I'll never say that the experience wasn't real to my grandmother.

I had such an experience. I was hit by a drunk driver and was in a coma for 22 days. It took me three years to walk again. I am a little timid about sharing about it because people would rather believe it was all a hallucination or something. What happened to me however was very real and quite personal. I will never forget it.
You may contact me in private if you would like... but I am cautious about sharing it here where people will stand as sideline spectators and comment on stuff they do not know.

There are many books today about the experiences of doctors
and nurses. You might go to a hospital or nursing home and get a first hand account.
Usually, right before one dies, they get calm and serene. Some say they see loved ones coming to get them.
I imagine some might have bad experiences. After all, our
beliefs don't just come from a few books. But from 1000s of years of these types of experiences.

The experience vary as much as people do but there are some common ties...possibly due to discussion of such an experience being a hot topic among people. Here's a site that contains info on NDEs (we really can't ask people who actually died): http://www.near-death.com/

My great-grandmother was asking where her other granddaughter was when she was dying. My grandmother had a miscarriage before my mother was born; there was no other granddaughter. So seeing deceased family members could be something to include.

When I died, I saw a white light, and it was drawing me in, getting brighter and brighter. It got so bright I could hardly bear to look at it, and then .... nothing.
