YES. Absolutely. My counter part from the west cost office has only a degree in Chinese History.... We work in the tele-communications feild.
A degree today proves only that you can achieve a goal. Your son should be able to look anyone in the eye and say "i belieave i can be successful in any feild"

yes it is normal.
Most of my friends who graudated from universities are now working in fields that are totally not related to their studies. Somehow, my enginerring major friends, most of them end up working for financial firms.

It is ok to work in different field. I am sure your son is kinda confused and is in search for his career path. I did that too. No one can help him. He needs to bump in to different jobs to learn what he likes and dislike ... which in turn ..helps him to narrow down what kinda job fits him the most.

In my opinion, I think most people don;t know what they really want to study in the first place. We pick majors to study assuming that the major is something I am looking to learn. However, after working in the society, numerous people go back to school. Because they realized that the knowledge they learned from school is not the skill they want to actually know.

If he's old enough to ponder and decide, then you as his mom need to bless his thought process and let him own it. His journey, his life, love him and let him experiment (provided it's legal and ethical)
