Religion has shaped society in the past and does so today, only when the true meaning of religion has been discovered can we develop beyond what we have now. The false meaning of religion or life is a tool used to control people and create divisions which politicians exploit

Coming from the perspective of a folklorist who focuses on this very topic, yes, actually. It's also detrimental. However, in the developmental stages of a society, religion was at one time absolutely essential, as this was what brought people to overcome arguments by a common bond of God's (or whoever's) will.

I think it's as helpful as it is a hinderance. Religion and Spiritual beliefs can setup a path for people in their lives... it can give them a sense of purpose, along with setting up a person's sense of morality and ethics. I see religion as a detriment when you have people from certain religions (Christianity most notedly) who do nothing but get on websites like this and constantly preach their Lord's name in the face of diversity.

Only in the basics christian teachings i.e. (The ten commandments) But other than that it falls by the wayside by it's staid old fashioned stale traditions! We really need a modern progressive church to counteract the declining morals of our youth! But instead we get the churches filled with paedophiles! and priests that have lost their way, and entrenched them selves until retirement, covered in the trappings of Christianity, but also covered in comfort and financial security!!!! That doesn't detract from the real people that try! and try really hard! but they are held back by people who procrastinate!
