Because it's standard police issue and bullets are cheap.
Oh-yeah, it gets the job done too.

I feel certain that ANYONE who has ever been shot by a 9mm complained about it because it wasn't a .45 or a 10mm.... Seriously, if you could remove your nose from the air long enough to get over the snobbery you exibit, you'd know their are plenty of 9mm rounds with PROVEN ballistics that equal and surpass the 40sw round, and come very close to equalling the .45 acp's energy displacement. Just because you might not like a certain caliber DOES NOT mean it's ineffective, it simply means you don't like the round. In a combat situation, or self defense scenario, your average distance is going to be less than 21 feet(7 yards) a solid torso shot with a "wimpy" 9mm will put you down just as fast as a 40sw,.45acp or 10mm will. The germans developed the 9mm parabellum( means for war) during ww2, the countless dead GI's killed by the 9mm apparently didn't think the 9mm is ineffective.

There are times I can't carry my .45 (mostly summer) So I think the .380 I do carry is more effective then the .45 I leave in my safe. That being said, I wish I could carry the 1911 all the time.

Not that i advocate such actions but for the purpose of arguments here are the possible reasons.
1. Size - It is smaller than a .45 therefore much easier to carry & conceal.
2. Number of rounds - it has 16 comparing to say .38 or .45 therefore it is really much prefered.
3. Weight - 2.5 lbs compare to .45 which is 3 lbs.

Some places like NYC don't want you having a bigger gun than the cops for some reason. At least that was their excuse when I was thinking of moving back there and checked on carry permits.

once again all of the answers are talking about the big bore calibers, a 2000.00 dollars pistol is worthless if you can't hit anything with it, their is nothing wrong with a 9mm, use the proper ammo, take time to train, know your ability, and the ability of the weapon, many people have been killed by a simple 22!!

I'm sure plenty of people have been killed by 9mm. The ammo is cheap to buy, so you can practice more.

What are you yapping at?
The very fact that you pull out a gun scares 99% of all attackers. And one shot, hit or miss, will scare the other 1%.
I'd rather shoot you 5 times straight than shoot twice with a .45 and miss both times.
DUH.
