We had this problem - our cats are pretty flea-free - but a stray came in through the cat flap while we were away on holiday (the flap was locked but the little horror was seen pushing it until it burst open).

It made itself quite at home and managed to infest our lounge and cats rather well - discovered when we saw a handful of fleas jumping around on a soft-rug.

It was a really cold time of year too - so the heating was on which they also love.

So - how we got rid (vets advice);

- turned heating off to chill the house which makes the fleas more dormant,
- bathe and comb all cats then Frontline them.
- dump every loose fitting or put through washing machine on a high temp wash.
- hoover the place through a few times - including sofa, curtains, behind and under furniture.
- wash all bedding in bedrooms and any coats, etc, that are near the area affected.
- mop all solid floors.
- buy some of the 'flea-bombs' from the big pets stores and then make sure things in the room that need treating are in place and the cats are out.
- close curtains, place flea-bombs onto saucers (we did 4 has we have a large lounge), close windows, etc, and light them and go out for a while as they stink and probably don't do humans much good!
- on return hoover the place over and over.

This worked for us - problem now contained to just the odd flea on our cats who are Frontlined and collared and their bedding washed weekly.

Good luck!

If your pets don't spend alot of time outside, they are probably getting the fleas from inside. The flea eggs lay dormant in your carpet for a long time. Have a pro exterminator come out and do his thing. That is the only sure way to get rid of the eggs. Can do the outside area that the pets are in yourself. Buy the stuff at walmart and follow the directions. I know from experience about this. Don't forget to empty the vacuum bag also or the eggs can hatch in it. The advantage works, but the fleas has to bite the pet first to ingest it. Careful not to use any other flea product on your pets while they are on other flea control. The advantage will stop the life cycle of the flea before more eggs are laid. Good luck.

Ask your vet about nouvan stay kill, its a spray you spray before you go out for the day or before bedtime, doesn't leave any sticky residue and quite pleasant on the nose, anything of the flea verity touches where you have sprayed over the next six months or so will quickly die, it is very good stuff as i have used it myself a while back, its not cheep though. Hope this helps.

Hi Kaz, I have the same problem. As soon as I see my female dog scratching I give her a bath with Dawn liquid soap. While she is in the tub my sons will put a powder on the carpet & then vacuum everything, couch cover will be changed.
During summer months I let her go swimming @ the beach, also she tends to get sand fleas summer months .One reason why I let her be washed often. Good luck

Hi Kaz
Its easy just go to your local pet store and buy the home spray for fleas and that will soon get rid of them. After a while you just hoover them up. Dump the hoover bag

Take them to your local humane society where they can be adopted out to new homes. Oh, and make sure it's a no-kill facility first. That's the only way I know of to get rid of "pet" fleas. Uh....otherwise get some Advatage from your vet and use it on your dog and/or cat (you can't use all brands on both dogs and cats)

why would you have gotten a flea for a pet in the first place if you just want to get rid of it. you should have thought of the consequences of getting a pet first. think how the poor fleas will feel now that you just want to abondon them. .
