Remember, Italian is a "Gender Specific" language.
"Cara" is the feminine form, and is only used for describing "feminine" nouns (or pronouns).
For masculine nouns or pronouns, the proper word is "caro."
Cara: feminine.
Caro: masculine.

For girls it´s "cara" and for boys is "caro" because there´s a difference between masculine and feminine gender:
"caro amico" for boys and "cara amica" for girls

Cara refers to women only as it is a feminine form in grammar. When you want to refer to men, you use: caro
in plural: cari (f.e. cari signori - dear sirs)
in plural feminine: (care signore - dear madams) So:
caro - cari (masculine)
cara - care (feminine)
