I do know of several people relating near death experiences of out of body feelings and visiting a bright city or coming across known deceased persons who drove them back to life.

Near death experiences don't prove heaven and hell. There are lots of other cultural views about the nature of existence and near death experiences occur to people in those other cultures. They don't interpret the experience in the same way and don't see them as 'heaven' and 'hell'

The problem with the (quasi-)scientific explanation is that it does not explain the content of the experience, nor is the experience sufficiently regular to be explained by the science (but that criticism also applies to the spiritual/religious interpretation too - if the light is part of existence why doesn't everyone experience it). One thing that strenghtens the neurological interpretation is that there are locations on the brain (on the temporal lobe if I remember correctly) that can be stimulated to give a person a simulated near death experience. However the whole of conscious experience is mediated through neurological experience, so saying you can create an effect doesn't really provide a sufficient explanation of the content.

There is currently no scientific proof of heaven and hell, but just because it is largely dogmatic religions that talk about them should not prevent there being a branch of 'experimental religion' that tries to find reliable, valid and verifiable proof. If they exist and have an effect it should be demonstrable.

From a scientific point of view, words in ancient books don't constitute proof of continued existence, and we currently have no way of directly accessing the contents of consciousness, or the workings of the unconscious mind. The closest we've got (I think ) are Magnetic Resonance and Positron Emission scans showing changes in brain activity under different circumstances.

Or you can just look at them as nice stories to make life more bearable (for some people). In which case looking for a scientific answer is about as pointless as looking for scientific proof that Middle Earth and Valinor exist.

The concept of heaven and hell relies on the concept of a 'soul'.

What exactly do you think a soul is? What properties does it have? What part of 'you' resides in the soul?

If it's postulated that consciousness, or awareness, or sense of self resides in the soul, it's difficult to see how this can be reconciled with the complete oblivion which accompanies general anaesthesia. How could a straightforward chemical, injected into the bloodstream, anaesthetise a soul so that it effectively ceases to exist during this time? If consciousness, in the form of a soul, were some kind of supernatural faculty, it would seem implausible that it could be completely disabled by a chemical.

How about some of the other things which we regard as essential parts of what makes a person what they are? How about love, compassion, reason, empathy, memory, conscious thought, character, 'spirituality' and so on? Well, there is really no plausible doubt that all these things are properties of the physical brain. We can alter all of these properties very simply with alcohol or other drugs, and observe how they change in people who have suffered significant brain damage - Previously placid people become uncontrollably violent, intelligent people become imbeciles, and so on. Stimulate the brain artificially, and the subject reports corresponding mental activity, e.g. 'religious experiences'. We can see from brain research that all these things - thought, emotion, sensation, character traits and so on - are correlated with activity in the brain, and some things can be identified with specific areas of the brain.

So, if all these faculties and characteristics of what we regard as the 'person' reside in the physical brain, as seems to be undeniably the case, and they all cease when the person dies, then what is left to be attributed to a 'soul'? As far as I can ascertain: Nothing. If there is no part of us that can continue after death, then there is no 'afterlife'... and if there is no afterlife, there is no heaven or hell, and religion is nonsense.

Faith is to have conviction in something so strong that even when evidence comes to light that may conflict belief the person with faith is able to shake it off.

There is no proof of heaven and hell and there is no reason to be in fairy tale land believing in all that.

Hell is Hades however u spell it where there was fire burning in this area I think thats where the people with leprosy had to stay.

The bible says Hell is the grave in a section, the quran is quite obsessed with this place of fire to burn people.

Heaven well you got space regarded as the heavens but the heaven you refer to is unreal.

The closest you can get to the heaven and hell thing is karma. YOu do good and get good back heaven. You do the opposite u get the opposite and in the end you die and leave this plain of existence. Yes there is something after death and info is available if prepared to look at things other than "HOLY BOOKS of today.

Ask any human psychologist. It is the state of mind. Heaven is like elated state. Hell is like being in the deepest depression. Is there scientific proof for this?

I don't have the conflict, some people do I don't being gay in conflict with being a servant of god. They are just not. I and if it were a sin since I would be unable to change what was in my heart and thinking alone even if I did believe god was against homosexuality which I don't believe then I'd still go to hell so what would be the reward of living the loveless life??!! Either way no.

Can you make sponge pudding from a euphonium ?
Of course you cannot prove heaven and hell scientifically ! It is asking to mix two different areas of life , like oil and water they don't mix . Apples and oranges cannot be added together , neither can the scientific and the spiritual , much to the annoyance of some scientists .
