Shotokan is Karate (Japanese). It is just the style that is taught at the Shotokan. There are many different styles of Karate. Tae Kwan Do (Korean) is very similar to Karate but it has more flashier kicks. Kickboxing is an American form of Muay tai. or Tai Boxing (Thailand) I gotta go with Muay Tai if I had to choose but Quicksilver is right it all comes down to the student and what they want to get out of it.

I like Shotokan too.
My friend, there are no better arts, only better artists.
The quality and frequency of training far outweigh the style of training.
To ask which one is better is to be missing the true point of training. You should train yourself to be the best you that you can be. Everyone walks a different path.
You should train at the highest quality facility within your means.
That is what would be best for you.
Check out the teachers lineage. Never pay for rank testing, never sign a contract.

If you like Shotokan, then go with it, but there isn't ANY Martial Art that is BETTER than another.
just make sure the instructor does a good job teaching you the discipline and encourages you to progress, and not try to "sell" you your belt ranks.
The Martial Arts discipline or style doesn't make you a good Martial Artist, only you can by training well and practicing.
