I've heard of a program I may want to put on my computer, but it requires this thing of which I've never heard... so just what is it, and would it normally be on a computer with Win XP as the OS?

To find out if it is installed on your pc, you can go to Control Panel, then add/remove programs. .NET Framework will be listed if it is installed.

If you need to install it, go to the Windows update site, click on CUSTOM. After your computer has been scanned for updates, click on the 'Software Optional' tab. .Net Framework will be listed.

After you have downloaded and installed the framework, return to the MS Update site and get the critical updates for it.

NOTE: I have installed .net Framework version 1.1 and the version 2 (the latest version) all in the same download, meaning they dont need to be installed seperately.

AS said earlier, the "NET FRAMEWORK" is a collection of code, or shortcut to code. For example if the function of retrieving ones username takes 10 lines of code, and it is in the net framework, it can be accessed via net framework in only 1 line vs the 10 lines.

Net framework is required for many applications, and espescially moving into future versions of windows.

NET framework 3 is coming, along wiht other versions of .NET.

Basically you want to go to the offical Microsoft site, and search for NET REDESTRIBUTABLE to download and install. It says you need net 1.1, but everyting in 1.1 is also in 2.0 .NET 2.0, and all future ersions will include all past .net code. So get the newest one.

Net cant hurt your computer at all. Just get it from offical microsoft site.

From Wikipedia (sorry!)
The Microsoft .NET Framework is a software component which can be added to the Microsoft Windows operating system. It is heavily inspired by the success of Java EE API Specification. It provides a large body of pre-coded solutions to common program requirements, and manages the execution of programs written specifically for the framework. The .NET Framework is a key Microsoft offering, and is intended to be used by most new applications created for the Windows platform.

Some programmes require .NET framework to run on your pc, for example the free paint replacement Paint.NET

if you install it, you will need to run windows updates; like everything else from microsoft, it has certain security flaws and needs to be patched!

It's for people who write programs for Windows. A developer tool.

Some windows applications use elements of it to operate.
