I thought I was an expert at this - what little things can you do to find out if a girl really is interested in you and not just being nice?

If I just went out and asked he then it wouldn't be flirting and it wouldn't be fun. plus, that would just be awkward

Here's the best test I know of:
1. Take your hand (left, right it doesn't matter)
2. Now with this hand grab between your legs.
You make ask what is this? These are your balls, use em! Ask her!
In all seriousness though (if you're saving your balls for a later day) try this: When she's talking to you (hopefully your balls got you this far) note how long eye contact is being made, if it's more then usual then you're doing good. Look into her eyes, is her pupils dialating? They'll do that if she wants you (peoples eyes do that when they're looking at something they want). Now if you've never talked to her before, ask her the time. If she says anymore then what the time is, good job (note: her saying I don't have a watch doesn't count).

there's a lot of things, you could use common sense and whatever, but oh well.
If she asks if you have a girlfriend
You wanna hang out?
Or if she keeps looking at you from time to time.
are the most common. but still, these are not as straightforwards as asking something like "do you like me?", so you can't depend on them.
if you're wanting to go out with her, then just be a man and say "do you want to go out with me". she won't slap you or kick you in the groin so hard your kids are going to feel it.

You could turn up the volume on your flirting. Be a little more obvious about your feelings, and she will be more obvious about hers (good or bad) atleast you'll know.

If you fart under the covers and pull them up over her head and she says, "Dammit dude, that's really nasty!!" But then she makes you breakfast in the morning, she likes you...
I've never actually done that, but she would really have to like you because that is a crappy thing to do to someone...
