The problem with expired medicare is chemical molecular structure breaks down on the pill, and the filler to pack the chemical structure in starts to decompose. The effect of taking expired medicine from a clinical point of view is could case interactions if a person takes other medications. Possible effects is subthpeutic effect, adverse reactions. In all, once the medication expired call a pharmacist to learn how to dispose of the medication safety. Also, if prescription is expired, and your still taking the prescription contact Doctor office, or other professional to get a new prescription. "Do not use expired medication"???

I"m not an expert on medicines. But it probably doesn't work as effectively. I'm pretty sure the medicine starts to break down when it starts to expire. Don't take expired medicine just in case, because it is possible that it can make symptoms worse or even create new ones!
best of luck! (:

Almost Every Medicine has its own side effects even when taken during the advised period. So, why would you want to take the risk of all possible disasters with expired medicine? Throw it into the trash and see your doctor if u r in need of some medication.

Several things, depending on what kind of medication you're talking about.
The most common thing would probably be that it deteriorated until it's almost useless. Some meds are sensitive to temperature, light, or other factors, and after awhile, they lose their effectiveness. And if memory serves me properly, I think some meds break down into various compounds that make things worse instead of better.
As someone else pointed out, you need to talk to a pharmacist to see if the medicine is good for a certain time after the expiration date. Follow his or her advice -- they went to school to learn that stuff and most of us here didn't.

Hi there,
I dont think there is any ill effect of taking expired medicine. I myself have taken expired medicines (Tablets and Liquids). Once I had used Dettol antiseptic liquid to clean ny wound. But that didnt do any thing wrong.
Unless you wont try yourself you wont come to know what is the answer for your question.

I asked a pharmacist about a certain prescription that was over a year old. He said it loses its' potency i.e. not as effective. I took it, and it worked fine/was effective. May depend on what you're taking and how/where you're storing it. I keep it in a cool dark place - not in the medicine cabinet. Best to disgard, imo.

It might not work as well as intended, or it might be just fine for years after the expiration date. It isn't likely to harm you, except that you could be harmed just by it not being effective.

You too will expire. Not much of a threat, unless it has green mold on it, and that could be a good thing. It just means much of the effectiveness could be gone.
