Sleep is all about developing a schedule to maintain a normal cycle. You need to go to bed at the same time every night regardless of whether you feel tired or not & once in bed - no tv, no reading. Your body needs to establish that the bed is for sleep & nothing else.

If you cannot sleep, then you need to stay awake until bedtime the following day. Taking naps will just make your cycles worse. I know you are anti-pill, but sometimes taking a sleep aid for only a week or 2 will re-establish your sleep cycle. Once you have a normal cycle, you can discontinue the medication & most people are able to begin sleeping on their own at that time.

Insomnia is often linked to depression. If you have had a lot of stress lately, consider discussing your concerns with your doctor. Sometimes, addressing these issues will cause the insomnia to resolve on its own.

1.Warm milk
2.Going to bed and wake/get up at a regular, scheduled time every day (including weekends) with a schedule before getting to bed (i.e. movie, shower, book, bed)
3. After lying in bed awake 30min, leave, do something, then return
4. Exercise throughout the day, but not within an hour before regular bedtime
5. Yoga exercises before attempting to sleep
6. Calisthenics before attempting to sleep
7. Play a CD containing nature noises while in bed
8. Read a monotonous book in bed
9. Don't eat anything within an hour before sleeping (with an exception to warm milk)
10. If all else fails try using Melatonin, it's an over the counter herbal, dietary supplement, with absolutely no addiction chances

Remember never to lie in bed awake for more than half an hour, never exercise right before sleeping, never eat right before sleeping, and don't ever, ever consume caffeine within seven hours of sleeping.

Good luck ;)

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical
problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be
cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful
for getting sleep.

You're right taking pills ins't a good method. They make you feel lie sh*t the next day. I recommend going to bed at least twenty minutes earlier than you think you should. Don't do anything like watch tv or read a book while in bed, because it might actually keep you up. This is coming from a girl who should have been in bed at least three hours ago.

Run 10km and climb 90 storeys with a 10kg backpack during daytime. You'll be shagged by nightime. About half an hour before you sleep, dim all the lights (don't switch off. just dim) and drink a glass of milk.

Try some Time-Released Melatonin supplements. It's a synthetic version of melatonin, which is a hormone your body produces to help induce a sound sleep.

I'm telling ya, go to the half-priced bookstore and get some meditation tapes and books on different meditation techniques. And practice them ritualistically. It takes practice. It's good physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally.

Spend some time out of doors, in full sun every day if possible.
Sunshine enhances melatonin production, which will help you sleep.
If you can't get the sunshine, buy some Ott lights, (full spectrum lighting). They will also help.
