I am considering fasting to help with my health and loose a few pounds. How has fasting worked for people? How do you motivate yourself not to eat or drink for a whole day?

Some theorize that fasting gives your body a chance to rest from digestion and a chance to shed weak cells as your body looks for fuel to conserve. Some people believe your over all health can be improved by fasting. Studies have been done which indicate that fasting increases the life span of humans. There is more than a little evidence that fasting may improve health.

I tired but I always give in...I need stronger will power. The most I've done has been 1 day. It was hard...I'm going to try a juice fast or sometimes I just skip meat for a couple of days..That's easier for me.

Good Luck !

After WWII, allied forces had the enormous problem of how to get jewish living skeletons back up to normal human weights. Massive food relief efforts were initiated, but progress was slow. It was almost as if their bodies had given up on gaining weight.

A few of the camps where the refugees were being fed had shortages, and would be unable to feed them some days. The refugees in these camps suddenly showed a remarkable ability to regain their weight quite rapidly.

Allied doctors began to study this phenomenon, and discovered that by making the refugees fast every now and then, they would actually GAIN weight much faster.

Fasting may or may not be good for your health, but it is a really crappy way to loose pounds.

I once fasted for 5 days. But I still allowed myself to drink whatever i wanted. You have to have fluids in order to stay healthy. Obviously you would want to stick to water and natural stuff...No soda.
After the five days I ate only very little....for about a week.
During that time I was also active(riding bike etc). Then I gradually went back to more normal eating habits. But Your stomach does shrink. So when you start eating again you will be actually hungry...and know when you are full immediately. I lost 45 lbs in three months by doing that. As far as motivation...I have NO IDEA...i don't think I could ever do it again. I just decided one day...OK I'm done being fat....and after I lost the weight...i never regained it again. Personally...i wouldn't recommend it...But it did work for me. How I did it I have no idea.

Fasting is NOT for losing weight. Fasting is for cleansing your body.

Not eating has ADVERSE effects with weight loss. However, if you are only fasting for a day, you probably won't do much harm (but you won't lose weight either).

If you want to cleanse your system, go for it. Drink plenty of water, keep yourself busy, etc., etc. But if you are doing it to lose weight, it's not gunna work.

**Additional info:
Not eating or fasting slows your metabolism. It makes your body produce excess of a fat-storing enzyme called lipoprotein lipase that holds on to your fat. And, eventually, it turns the amino acids from your muscles into glucose (breaks down muscles) if it doesn't have calories it can do that to.

Soo, not a good idea to lose weight in the way you think it might. Also, once you start eating again, now your metabolism is low and you got that fat storing enzyme in your body.. this can make you gain a lot of weight really quickly.

***P.S. Yes, your sources are right. Fasting is healthy if it's like a day or two. It can cleanse out your body, but it's not going to do anything for your weight loss.

You can consider fasting in two ways:first, spiritually and second physically
in the first way you feel yourself close to the poor ,who don,t have much to eat.you feel a stronger soul . you feel God in you .you think more about other human beings.
In the second way,you give a rest to your digestion system, you may loose weight ,of course if you don,t eat too much when you break your fast.

fasting is not healthy, I have to say. I gfast once a year for religious purposes, all it serves is to make me very hungry at the end of the day. Also, one must drink water if need be, or eat if need be or else they would die. I motivate myself bu keeping busy, it's a little hard at some times, but you'll be happy rhat we csn travel together.

I once did a 30 hour famine for youth group. we didn't eat for 30 hours and raised money for starving people. After the 30 hours we had pizzas delivered and I could barely eat one piece because my stomach shrunk. So if you dont eat for that long your stomach will shrink, but will probably stretch back out, so fasting isn't a very efficient way to lose weight.
