Well, it seems like you want a bike for two different purposes really. If you mean by 'on the street', you'll be riding the bike as transportation from point A to Point B, a BMX is the wrong choice. 20" wheels are really inefficient for travel, and it's hard to get a decent riding position on a BMX - they aren't designed for that. If by 'on the street', you mean street riding as in ledges, rails and curb cuts, then a BMX is teh right thing. For the most part, a 'street' bmx and a 'dirt' jumping BMX are very similar, except for the tires, and usually a street bike will have pegs, and a dirt bike will not. The most important feature to look for is a 100% CroMoly steel frame. Avoid frames that only have one or two CroMo tubes, that are 'TriMoly', or feature Hi-Tensile steel. These types of frames are heavy and not nearly as strong as a full CroMo frame. Most complete bikes now feature 3-Piece cranks, but it'sa double edges sword because in your price range, $300, the 3 piece cranks on that bike will be ultra heavy. Whereas 1 piece cranks won't be quite as strong, but will weigh much, much less. Look for asmany sealed bearings as you can, this will increase the longevity of the bike by quite a bit, and make maintaining the biek much simpler. Honestly, it will be hard to get a decent BMX bike for $300 or less. Most bikes in this price range will have Hi-tensile frames, heavy, forged 3 piece cranks and unsealed bearings. Try to avoid whistles and bells on your bike - pegs and a gyro for example, on inexpensive bikes just add weight, usually don't work very well and detract from the value of the more important core components on the bike. At the moment, the best VALUE bmx bikes are made by a company called Integral. I don't love their bikes, but at your price point, you'll get the most bike for the money.

The 2009 model Eastern Lowdown is a gem if you are just beginning the sport of BMX. Pretty lightweight and graphically gorgeous in its red colored design it is a fantastic quality BMX bicycle and is very affordable.
