Oh my gosh! Your cat doesn't hate you dear, she's just not into sitting on the couch. Most cats get set in their ways and sleep where they are comfortable. A cat sleeps about 18 to 20 hours a day, so you may be sitting on the couch during her sleep times. How were you with her when she was a kitten and up to now? Did you hold her and cuddle her a lot? Did you pat her and get her used to having a person around her? It does depend somewhat on how the personality of the cat is and somewhat on how you raise them. There are also differences between male and female cats. Males tend to be cuddlers more than females. Just love her anyway and know that she does not have the feelings of hate the same as we do, so she doesn NOT hate you at all.

What Breed or Color is your cat? Do you know if it was socialized with people as a kitten, how is the cat with other family members. If you are kind to the cat and it will not sit on the couch w/u it's just not a couch kitty. Some cats love to sit on family members some just don't. I had a red and white tiger cat and she'd sit on me for a few minutes get some scratches behind her ears from me then take off. I had a Manx Calico who never ever was social to anyone except feeding time. My daughter has a red and white tiger he's acts exactly like mine did very sweet but not a big couch kitty. She has a Calico and it's very unsociable but sit on my soninlaws lap only,go figure.I've known cats who won't get off your lap. Find out what the cat likes and have fun. Our Kitty loved us to scrunch up the TV guide pages and throw them like balls (come to think of it that's what the red & white one my daughters has loves to do). he hits them and goes crazy running around suddenly stops and waits for a new page. Find a common thing you and the cat like to do. But in the end I'm sure you love it for who it is and next time do a kitty sitting in the lap test. I got a Pug as a puppy who was such a love but the little stinker would have loved it if he could have been in my lap all day and night. That's why they call them lap dogs. Some cats are like that also but not usually. Love to You and the Kitty, Ricki

Cats are very independent creatures. If you watch Discovery Channel you will see that with the expception of lions, all big cats live alone. I used to be a cat lover but im just not into them anymore. They can't be trained, thier very picky, very moody, cant handle rejection, and yet they are helpless when stuck in a tree. Hey i just described women!! Anyways, if you want a true animal companion get a dog, heck even birds make better companions than cats!

As the saying goes, "Its not you..." Seriously, some cats are just not the cuddly, effectionate sort. These tend to be a lot more independent or aloof than others. Its true what they say that each cat has his/her own personality - just like us humans. That's why in the better pet adoption centers, they try to match up pet and potential owner. Some cats are super active, some are layback. Some can't seem to leave you alone while others (like your cat) wants to be left alone. So, don't take it hard. I am sure that your kitty loves and appreciates you.

Try these things. Buy a catnip toy or an interactive toy and play with her. Give her treats with your hand. Pet him/her when she is just laying down somewhere (don't annoy her though). Try spending time with her, but don't force it on her. If your not the one that feeds her or spends a lot of time with her then your bond may have never really developed. But if you start paying attention to her, talking to her & Petting her. Then she may come around! Good Luck!

If you want an animal that you know will want to spend time with you, get a dog, and train it well. Cats are a gamble. Many of them are too independant. Dogs are pack animals - very loyal, as long as you establish yourself as being in charge (and I don't mean beating your dog). If you let it walk all over you though, he won't care about you. Get a dog, get a trainer.

My dog never leaves my side. If I'm home, he's with me. If I go to the bathroom, he waits outside the door.

Your cat's just not that into you!

I know it sounds flip, but that's how some cats are. One of my friends (also a cat person) sent me the book "Your Cat's Just Not That Into You" by Richard Smith and it covered this issue as well as many others.

It's really a "people who are owned by their cat" handbook. If nothing else, it will confirm that you are not alone!

That's just the way most cats are. Mine doesn't like me picking him up, but when he wants to, he gets up on my lap & lays down. Pet it & talk to it a lot. Get one of those fishing pole type, cat toys & play with her. They love that. When you least expect it, it'll come to you. They are amazing animals. I've found out by having females most of my life & then getting a couple of males, the males are more loving [that is if you get them neutered, which you should anyway--male or female]. Good Luck!

Cats can be very aloof. Try feeding her some treats from your hand but only when she is lying on your lap. Pretty soon she'll be purring away and napping on your chest. Don't be too touchy-feely at first. Some cats don't like that. Hard to imagine, I know... but I've got one like that./

Stick some tuna between your legs when you're sitting on the couch and maybe the cat will give you some attention then
