A tree fell on the cottage
Ok, you'd need to give more info to solve a riddle like that. There could have been several ways the two men died. Apparently it was a plane crash. But a tree could have fallen on the cottage since you said they were walking through the woods. Or, a bolt of lightening could have hit the house, burning it down, and effectively destroyig it, while killing the men. there just seriously wasn't enough info to give more then a guess.

Well, I hope I'm allowed to answer. I was an atheist for a long time, a few years back I could've even said half my life. I was an atheist up to the moment I met my gods. I didn't benefit from that meeting for a long time. In fact, it cost me friends, a community, even trust of my own senses for a while. I spent a lot of money trying to prove to myself I had delusions or hallucinations. I am absolutely certain that a person of my education and intelligence and background could not be a theist WITHOUT that experience. So, to answer the question question part of the question, the answer lies in experiencing the divine. And, if you haven't experienced it, it's not for you, and atheism *is* the only logical choice, except, perhaps, agnosticism. There are TONS of things in this world we accept as "not truth for all" things like spouses, love, sexual proclivities, favorite music or flavors. Why *not* put the divine in that category? By the way, in regards to the distinction here between creation theists and science, I *am* a scientist, I study the natural world and I believe the veins in a leaf, the curl of a shell, the human eye and the rest *are* the result of purely natural forces, as are humans, as are the gods. Logically, if something in the universe like us can exist, something in the universe greater than us can as well. Ah, I love being the third hand, to borrow a phrase.

Probably because the cabin fell on them. I don't think they climbed into the rubble to die.
