Herd guarding breed:

Rhodesian Ridgeback

Kuvasz

Great Pyreenes

Bouvier

All these breeds will watch over the livestock and the kids.

Which one depends on your climate - Rhodesians are very short coated and don't do well spending hours outside in the northern winter. Pyrs and Kuvasz have long coats.

Sometimes the local pound will have just what you are looking for. Maybe a young adult that has already been around horses and kids would work.
I train my German Shepherd Dogs in Schutzhund, and our trainers board horses and dogs. My dogs are intrigued by the horses, but don't bother them. Personally, I love the Shepherd, but they are a high energy, (normally) dominant breed that isn't for everyone. Mine are wonderful with all my nieces and nephews and my toddler. Even my show line boy is good around the horses! My working line boy really does not know what to make of them, but he is so stable (confident without being aggressive) that he mostly ignores them.

No matter what breed you get, it will only be as good as its owner. If you do not show any kind of dominance and teach your dog and also show respect to your dog. then no matter what kind of dog you have it will not make a good companion of any kind.
You also must have horses that are good with other animals, and children too, if they don't all get along you will have a hard time.
Good Luck. I personally prefer Mastiffs and Bull Mastiffs.

Golden Retriever! We've had them for over 30 years and always with horses, kids, cats, and other farm animals. They're wonderful! One of ours even figured out what we were doing when hunting down cows on forested government land and herded them. I've never had them act aggressive towards our kids or critters and they're easily trained. They can be protective when necessary. I've had terrible experiences with German Shepherds and other aggressive breeds (not my dogs). It's more natural for some breeds to chase and kill, especially when 2 or more get together in a roaming pack.

Short hair golden labs. They are great and loyal family dogs and absolutely wonderful with children. Any type of herding dog is usually great for anything with farm animals. I suggest going to http://www.petfinder.com and finding the right breed for your families needs. They have a questionaire I found very useful.
