You can dress up the simplest foods by using two things. Spices and Sauces.

Not the canned varieties of sauces either, if you want to save money and don't have many ingredients. With flour, salt & pepper, butter and milk you can make a white sauce. Check the Betty Crocker Cookbook or google "white sauce" on the internet for the recipe.

To the white sauce you can add varying spices like chili, or basil, or cheese. You can stir in a bit of tomato paste (or ketchup) to change the flavor and color.

Remember to be successful, a dish must not only be delicious, but be presented nicely too. Add a bit of color to a brownish meat or potato dish with a sprinkle of dried parsley or chives (fresh if you have it growing in your yard). Add half a diced carrot or a half cup of peas. Whatever you have that will add a bit of contrast and color will work fine.

When we didn't have much money and I had four kids and a husband to feed, I'd reach for the cheese. Grated cheese on almost anything makes it special.

If you would name some of the ingredients it would be easier to help you. However, if you go to Chatelaine.com or Canadianliving.com, there are drop down menus that allow you to choose your ingredients and the option of 'budget', and it will put a meal together for you.

I have done this many times on a college budget with scraps in my fridge.
