I am not sure but when i was studying in Turkey i heard alot about M.K.Ataturk and what he did against the islam...
Unfortunately, Turk people dealing with Ataurk like god, the young people beleive everything written in their school books...
You can see that clear in the answers of this question,
The girls who answered and beleived that the Muslim women shouldnt wear hijab because Ataturk Didnt want the hijab although ALLAH said in the Qurran the women should wear hijab. Are you in Turkey Following Ataturk or Allah orders??? (If you Muslims)??? Do you know sweet girls that you will go to hell with your Ataturk if you didnt wear the hijab??? Prophet Mohammed said to men to leave their "Sakal" and your Ataurk didnt allow for it. Are you following Ataturk or Prophet Mohammed Orders???
and and and etc.
I lived in Turkey 7 years, i am talking to you Muslim Turks...
How are you Muslims and dont fast in Ramadan (Most of you)???
How are you Muslims and dont Pray (the first thing you will be asked after died is the pray)????
How are you Muslims and you drink Alkohol ???
How are you Muslims and the girls wear semi nude???
How are you Muslims and most of you have girl or boy friend sleeping with???????????????????
How are you Muslims and you dont want the islam roles in Turkey?????
etc.
etc.
etc.
i said before i lived in Turkey 7 years and i have alot of friends their i like turk people but i hate their thinking about islam, your information about islam are veryyyyy veryyyyy veryyyy weak that because your leaders dont want you to know more about islam.
the end

Mate You defiantly got the wrong idea.
No Turkish person , I mean a real one like a true lover of this country and its rights with its people ever speaks or thinks against Ataturk and states this " Ataturk was against Islam and Muslims " sort of crap. So I m proud to say you ve heard tht WRONG!!
In fact a reason for him to be loved and be respected this much lies at the effort of his work both on his people and his genius on Modernising Islam to the standards much higher from any other country tht has considered Islam as a religion.
I have and will always respect the man that saved a nation ... Re build a nation with the nation ( its people ) =) And The Man who fought like one and respected all his enemies...
" Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives.. you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours.. You the mothers who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears. Your sons are now living in our bosom and are in peace. Having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well"

Look I am lf Greek half Italian and like most peopel from and not from Turkey, jut like Winston Churchill said I admire Ataturk. And he is cleary one of the best leaders that the world has ever produced. He was not against any religion. He was aginst the country being ruled by religion, any religion for that matter, Islam Christianity, Judaism whater it maybe. the concept of secularism is in the constitution of Turkey better than any oer country in the world. Believe or not. Even in the United States, the elected President swears with his hand on the bible, but the country has millions of mims, jews, hindus, buddhistsnd atheists. t the President swes on Christian principles. In Turkey with Ataturks leadersp he made sure that government affairwere seperated from religious affairs. He realized that religion if used isely can be a tool to bring people together, but at the hads of wrong people it is also the greatest seperater in the world. There are the fundamentalist Muslims in Turkey these days trying to make Turkey turn into Iran, butthe principles Ataturk adted are not letting this happen and it will ever happen. These peopel are the least educated in the whole country I dont think they will be succesful. lived there for 2 years and enjoyed my freedom. And it sall stay that way.

1st, he wasnt against Islam and Muslims, but he was against the sheikhs and mollas becoz they could easily provoke ignorant muslims not to found a modern and laic republic. He was succesful on a large scale, even very succesful, becoz we r talking about 100 years ago, every Muslim in Anatolia and Istanbul were fanatic. To change the Islamic regime to modern republic was an unbelievable hard job...
Today in 2006, unfortunately we still have problems with those fanatic muslims which want to turn back to the Islamic laws.
SO, WE MUST WALK BEHIND HIM.
And for your 2nd question, no, its not true. Where did u hear this nonsense thing?

i'm properly conscious that, on the time of its writing, the Quran replaced into an fairly compassionate document. yet you presently have that the very accurate-wing fruitcake fringe (don't be offended, the christians have theirs too) that blows issues up and is amazingly rigidly anti-each and every thing, and those are those that get the publicity. And the "mainstream" Muslims tolerate those fruitcakes. in case you would possibly want to crack down on them, human beings might want to appreciate you a lot extra. i comprehend there are solid Muslims. i have also well-known some christian females that had muslim husbands and they were @assholes. so that you want to clean up your act. Sorry, i opt to appreciate you as a faith, yet you're making it awful demanding by technique of your human being habit issues. advantages on your journey!

We love Ataturk. He is not aganist ıslam and Muslims. He just don't want women dress in black strict hijabs for women rights. And he wants ''ezan'' (moslem call to prayer) language turkish, not arabic. He dies in Turkey, not Ottoman Empire. And Ottoman empire regret him one or two. Ottoman Empire is like in same place with Turkey, thougt.

Oh my God, what an ignorance. Seems like you know nothing about Atatürk except the crap you've heard from stupid people. If you believe such crap (land not accepting him three times) you should read lots and lots and lots.
PS: He was not against Islam or Muslims he was against people who used religion as a cover for their ignorance. In this case, you're one of them, sorry.

I don't know if Turks like Ataturk. Maybe in the beginning his nationalist views were popular when the Ottoman caliphate was in decline. But now decades after his death, his ideology comes under attack from devote Muslim Turks and from non-Turks living in Turkey.
Devote Muslims don't like his secularism, and watched Turkey slip into the social and economic problems of secularism. This gave rise to Islamic parties in recent decades. Many Turks still like their Muslim identity and don't like the reactionary nature of Ataturk's ideology which can be described as extereme secularism (something that is as negative as extreme Islam).
Non-Turks in Turkey, especially the Kurds, suffered as the nationalist Turkish government tried to impose Turkism on all peoples living in the country. Resistance continues against such policy.
I don't say that many Turks don't like Ataturk. He is still popular among many who like the lack of restriction in secularism. It is something that you see in many Muslim countries, but it usually fades as the person becomes older.
Although Ataturk's ideas had their benefits, but they were problematic in many facets. The main challenges are dealing with the Muslim tradition of the people of Turkey, dealing with non-Turks in the country, and proofing that his ideology can run the country.
