I answered in your first question that perhaps the energy is just the nuclear fusion within the sun. If so, then the "search for understanding" is mostly complete -- Physicists already have a pretty good understanding of nuclear fusion. Of course, they don't yet know why there is any hydrogen at all (or anything else for that matter) to fuse. I suspect that latter question is closer to what you assume we are all trying to understand.
Science is trying to understand not only the details of how the Big Bang unfolded, but to figure out why there was a Big Bang and even to figure out what came before the Big Bang. But science does not make "metaphysical" assumptions. Are you assuming that only a search for metaphysical answers is worthwhile? Because science is not personal and personalized. The scientific method only works when it is public and cooperative.

While all of humanity may not be driven to understand the energy that powers this existence, it certainly has been a driving force that has increased in momentum over the centuries.
People who are struggling just to survive have little time and inclination to ponder the complexities of existence, but there have always been men so consumed. As we, as a species, continue to evolve, more and more of us are taking the time to think about it for ourselves and come to our own conclusions. What's truly surprising is that so many of these free thinkers are coming to the same conclusions, no matter what perspective they may have started with.
While this search may not drive every man, the search itself has driven man as a whole to learn, grow and improve.
Namaste,
Gwen

Although the search for the energy source outwardly appears personal as per the spectrum of competing beliefs and notions on the issue, sadly most of those who maintain said personal beliefs have merely adopted and accepted wholesale the prevailing notion on the issue maintained by the society from which they were reared. And tragically, a rejection of those prevailing beliefs is looked down upon by that same society, hence perpetuating the cycle.
The good news is, that no matter how far off you are from another's beliefs, there is only one source from which we all emanate and return to. And the widely adopted position of most established religions, that the source is an impotent invisible avenger requiring certain needs be satisfied for its own completeness vis-a-vis we, is, well, nothing short of humorous.
So enjoy the experience of this imperfect life . . . it has no meaning. We are all here merely to experience that which we are not in ultimate reality . . . pure love energy.

The search for God is very personal. You will never convince all people that there is some energy that powers this existence. That would be acknowledging a supreme being or power source with intelligence.

People who don't click on links they can see are n00bs.
The search for this energy is what drives some people but most people are in search for something else. Even many people who are deeply religious do not search for God or a creator but to be good follower of that holy being. Additionally many who search for this energy are not looking for god. Many physicists are searching for this energy scientifically, and many people, scientists and pseudo-scientists are searching for a ToE(Theory of Everything).

a driving force, i'll agree to, but not the driving force. there are many people who go through life not the least bit curious about a creator.
