The only reason I chew gum is because my throat gets dry at times & there's nothing around to drink. If I don't, I gag & get choked. I think I'd rather chew gum at a wedding or funeral than to make a scene choking & coughing w/ a dry throat. Some people just need it.

Well I don't know about the disrespecting factor but I don't like the sounds people make while chewing. Lots of people don't realize they are making sounds when they chew. And lots of people do chew with their mouths open. Much like cows eating. If I want to freshen up my breath I either brush my teeth or take some kind of mint. It's less noisy.

Chomping on gum is considered inappropriate during the situations you mentioned above. However, people chew gum to freshen their breath, increase concentration, ease anxieties/ reduce stress. I have been bothered by other peoples' loud chewing before and it's an indication of oversensitivity which means you are stressed out. Try relaxation breathing. It sometimes helps me; sometimes I just have to go home.

I like Trident Cinnamon because my grandmother chewed it every day and she always smelled good, like cinnamon. I chew gum to keep my breath fresh, especially at events where there'll be family I have to kiss on the cheek and talk to. It's important to smell good, and I don't snap, pop, blow bubbles, or chew with my mouth open, so since I'm not obvious about the way I'm chewing it I don't see it as disrespectful.

I think that the whole gum-chewing thing is overrated. I quit chewing gum over 10 years ago.

It is a good relaxer, and helps keep your breath fresh as well. Chewing it can be a habit, and that it why they do it everywhere. It is disrespectful in important events, and it is helpful not to chew there.

It is a social habit that people have picked up. It makes them feel 'cool' and/or gives them something to focus their nerves on. To me it is the same as someone who fidgets, but instead they just chew on something. Nothing disrespectful about it, they do not intend for the chewing of gum to be that way.

I quit smoking so I chew gum instead. And it can be chewed without the whole world knowing.

A lot of times i find that chewing gum when I'm nervous or stressed helps makes me calm. So that's probably why they do it.
