What tendencies do alcoholics posses?

Tough Question.

There is one type called a Functional Alcoholic and you'd never know they were drinkers.

I'd guess a lot of the definition might be based on region. In the United States drinking is frowned upon, yet in many European countries a beer with breakfast is not uncommon. Drinking a beer at breakfast in my family would be a quick label of "alcoholic."

There are the extremes of alcoholism -- binge drinking, black outs, angry drunks -- sometimes I think these troubled people need an excuse to act out portions of their lives that they are frustrated with.

There has been some talk of an 'alcoholic gene', meaning it can run in the family. This would mean than the children (at any time of their lives) might start some drinking and fall into it very very easily.

So -- I don't think there is any specific tendency beyond an addiction and even that may not be easy to define. One person might just quit and another may jones hard.

Many alcoholics have an number of "isms" that they identify in their personality that existed before they ever started to drink heavily.
Most have some feelings of "not fitting in" and drink to be able to do so.
Many feel that they lack courage and turn to alcohol to feel courageous.
Many feel an inability to cope.
Many have alcoholic relatives.
Many male alcoholics have difficulty asking women for dates, dances, and the like without first drinking.
Most alcoholics report feelings of fears, doubts and insecurities prior to ever picking up.

That said, many of these conditions may be met without the person ever becoming an alcoholic. Some theories pose that alcoholics ae people who have a specific allergy to alcohol which causes intense cravings once alcohol is injested. These cravings and compulsions drive the alcoholic to drink even when they truly desire to stop.

Blackouts are considered by some professionals the hallmark of a true alcoholic. Many social drinkers can on occasion drink great quantities of alcohol, get drunk, or pass out, but not forget what they were doing. Alcoholics, on the other hand, can have blackouts, still be awake and functioning at some level, but have a complete lapse of memory as to what they were doing.

Other signs of alcoholism include desensitization to alcohol, where vast quantities of alcohol will not produce the effect of drunkenness. Likewise, the reverse is also true. In some severe alcoholics, a phenomenon of reverse tolerance takes place and the alcoholic may become very drunk after only one or two drinks.

Well if you read the AA papers they will tell you anyone who drinks once a day - however - drinking is a means of 'self medication' - in other words rather then talking to a psychologist about anxiety or fear - the list is endless and taking something from a pharmacy the person drinks booze. Sounds like someone you love has a problem - hope things work out - everyone has some personal problems and you are not alone - neither is the person your are worried about.

Gross Drinking Behavior: They begin to drink more heavily and more often than their friends. "Getting wasted" becomes a habit. When drunk, they may develop a "big shot" complex, recklessly spending money, boasting of real and imagined accomplishments, etc.
Blackouts: A "blackout," temporary loss of memory, is not to be confused with "passing out," or loss of consciousness. The drinker suffering from a blackout cannot remember things they said, things they did, places they visited while carousing the night before - or for longer periods. Even a social drinker can have a blackout. With prospective alcoholics, the blackouts are more frequent and develop into a pattern.
Gulping and Sneaking Drinks: Anxious to maintain a euphoric level, they begin to pass off drinks at parties and instead slyly gulp down extra ones when they think nobody is looking. They may also "fortify" themselves before going to a party to insure their euphoria. They feel guilty about this behavior and skittishly avoid talking about drinks or drinking.
Chronic Hangovers: As they grow more and more reliant on alcohol as a shock absorber to daily living, "morning after" hangovers become more frequent and increasingly painful.

At 77 and a practicing type alcoholic, I get nervous about noon and need a beer this leads to one more. Then in the evening maybe one more. If I don't have my two or three beers I get like worms crawling under my skin, and grouchy.

kinda of a weird question, but they have studies that distinguish if you have an addictive personality, but as an alcoholic to me it means I drink thinking it will let me escape or let me be more uninhibited, give me the power to fight, expand to a deeper thought, but none ever happens, yeah i get a cool buzz, but mostly trouble and misery!
