This is a sincere question. I thought that they were the same since they both don't believe in god but obviously, ther is a difference. What's the difference?

Knowledge Seeker,
The word athiest comes from "a" a prefix meaning without and Theist which originates from theology or religion. So an atheist believes there is no true religion that comes from a
Diety or a God. An evolutionist is someone who believes in the scientific facts that Darwin proved in the Galapagos Islands where he studied isolated animals that had adapted to their environment by changing colors or growing wings or appendages. His theory of "Survival of the Fittest" just mean that the animal that fit it's environment best always survived and others died off from not adapting enough or EVOLVING enough. I understand Darwins theories and accept them but it's an entirely different thing to think that we as humans evolved from monkeys or apes. Despite progress in biology, I have a hard time accepting this one.

An ATHEIST does not accept the concept of the God of Abraham, or any other deity described by humans. This position, while certainly valid since no proof whatsoever has ever been produced on behalf of any human god descriptions, does not at all imply a less moral person than the religious believers.

An EVOLUTIONIST is a person of whatever religious persuasion that believes that all life on Earth ha evolved from single-celled protazoa up through the most complex fish and animals, of which homo sapiens sapiens (regular humans) is one.

Most religious people are also evolutionists--the Catholic Church endorses evolution enthusiastically and evolution concepts are taught in all Catholic schools. Some fundamentalist religionists don't like evolution because they don't understand it, and certainly don't understand that accepting evolution theory has nothing to do ,with believing in the God of Abraham one way or the other.

Though there are some atheists that take evolution and the big bang theories as truth, most just do not believe in any deity. Though both theories do have evidence and could be true they still are just theories. Corrupted with materialism? Do you know that some of the most wealthy atheist are philanthropists? What "new observation" are you talking about? Theist either believe in a religion who's only references are very old books, or they are a contradictory spin on the same old religions. Though some atheist join with others to form groups, most do not need a shepherd nor flock. I can not say if your opinion on fundamentalist is right or wrong because I never was one, but seeing that your opinion of atheists as a whole is so wrong it is probably just as ignorant.

Atheism is the lack of belief in the existence of any gods. It can include outright denial of the existence of gods, lack of interest in the existence of gods, and disbelief due to a lack of information.

Evolutionary Theory
The nature of evolution is often misunderstood - quite frequently it is mangled terribly by creationists who are trying to argue against something they cannot define. Probably the simplest definition of evolution is this:

...evolution can be precisely defined as any change in the frequency of alleles within a gene pool from one generation to the next. (Helena Curtis and N. Sue Barnes, Biology 5th ed. 1989 Worth Publishers, p.974)

So what does that mean? First, an allele is just a variation of a gene. There is only one gene for eye color, but people with blue eyes have one allele of that gene and people with brown eyes have a different allele of that gene.

Evolution occurs in a gene pool over the course of generations. Thus, individual organisms do not evolve, in the sense of biological evolution. Evolutionary changes are those which affect distinct populations of organisms which constitue a gene pool. If these changes are heritable and passed along, it can be said that this population has evolved.

It should be noted that this has nothing whatsoever to do with the origins of life - evolution is about the changes that happen when life exists and makes no claims about where life may or my not have come from.

Atheism is a rejection that God exists. Most Atheists reject superstion of any sort and reject also a belief in an after life. Many atheists emphasize science as a source of knowledge about life and the universe.

Evolution is a scientific theory describing the way that life developed on earth. It is widely accepted among the scientific community, but many people who believe in the inerrancy of the Bible have trouble accepting an explanation for life that is at odds with the creation story in Genesis. However, many people who accept evolution also believe in God.

Evolution is not an atheistic belief. Evolution is a scientific attempt to describe the biological mechanism which god uses to continually create newer, more capable life forms. Certain aspects of it disagree with the more strict interpretations of several religious holy books, but so did the notion that the earth revolves around the sun.

They'll all get over it.

I can't believe the ignorance of some people. Atheists don't believe in God, regardless of their line of work. Biologists study evolution, regardless of their religious beliefs! There are biologists of every religious background, including atheists, Jews, Muslims, and devout Christians, all of them accepting the plain evidence of biological evolution. Evolutionary biology has NOTHING to do with religion, except in the twisted minds of a few hyperfundamentalist denominations.

An atheist does not believe in anything they cannot touch and feel or measure.
And evolutionist can either believe that the universe and everything in it was an accident. or believe in a God and evolution.
Evolution is what happens after something has been created first.

Atheists do not believe in dieties... that is the ONLY thing that defines them. Since NOT believing in dieties is rational... and since evolution is rational... it is not surprising that most atheists find evolution to be realonable, and the most likely explanation for the observed changes to the genetic makeup of populations of organisms, over time... although 'belief' has nothing to do with it.

Many Christians... the smarter ones... have no problem with the concept of 'evolution'.

An atheist doesn't believe in a supreme power.

An evolutionist may believe in a supreme power, and even in Christianity, but not in the Creation theory that is in the Bible, or other creation myths that ALL societies have had through the ages.

An agnostic doesn't believe in a supreme power, but allows that one may exist. He/she just hasn't been convinced of that being true at this point in his/her life.
