im currently a sophomore in college. honestly, when i was a junior in high school, my counselor didnt help me much with picking colleges and scholarships. she signed all the paperwork and just pretty much talked to me for a few minutes just to get an idea with what im going to do after i graduate. she had too many kids to work with and didnt have enough time to help us individually.

i did most of my college and scholarship searches by myself. i used to find some local scholarships and i definitely looked into the scholarships at the schools i was interested in attending. I checked if i qualified and applied to those too.

as for meeting a surgeon, I suggest maybe applying for a volunteer position in a local hospital, specially asking for volunteering in the ER. There, you will get to meet a lot of doctors, many who will be more than happy to talk to you, and you'll also get to experience how it is to work in a different environment such as the hospital. I still volunteer when im in college and I've definitely talked to a lot of doctors and nurses, which all gave me such good advice.

Im not stopping you from talking to your counselor, but she may not have the time to help you with your narrow needs. However, its definitely a good place to start to get some ideas of where to begin your search. good luck at applying to college, have fun while you're doing it, and enjoy the rest of high school! you're going to miss it!

You didn't say how old you were and what grade you are in. But school counselor will be a good place to start. I don't know if he/she can pick a college for you, or help you with scholarships, but he/she will give you an idea on how you can proceed.

As to meet/interview any professional in the field, one of the best ways to do this, is to write a courteous, short, to the point, letter and send it to area businesses. (in this case, a hospital)

Someone is bound to respond and grant you an interview. Many (not all) successful professional likes to give their life experiences to aspiring new-comers. Also, you could contact medical colleges in your area, and do the same.

If you get an interview, realize, those people are BUSY. Write down all of your questions ahead of time and keep it brief. Be sure to show up dressed properly and show at-most respect at all times.

The worst thing that can ever happen to you is get absolutely no reply......

I would say that your counsellor could definitely help, it's their jobs to know about these things. Your counsellor would most definitely be the best person to talk with.
